I am applying right now and would enter med school fall 2009 but I would like to take some time in between undergrad and med school to serve in the Army. Something I have always wanted to do and this would be the only time I could do it. Is there any chance that if I get accepted this year I could get a deferral, longer than the normal one year, to do a tour of duty or the required minimal time?

This begs the question why are you applying now then? Apply when you finish with that. Or go for an armed services scholarship that way you can serve in a medical vicinity after you finish without a deferral.
