Just ending my first year of residency but I was hoping someone could share details on the Army GI programs at WRNMMC and/or BAMC. Specifically, how bad is the call schedule, how busy is it, are the fellows happy, how many fellows do they take, etc.

Any info would be appreciated.

thanks!

Both are combined programs. The bethesda program takes 3-4 Army fellows/year. I'm not sure about BAMC. Your consultant is dr Harrison. He's an established expert and thought leader in nafld. I assume you are not at either site. You may well have to do a staff tour first.

I trained at both programs, one for residency the other for fellowship. When I was a resident I did GI rotations and got to know the staff. Call is not too much of an issue for GI fellowship in the military. When on call, you may get pestered at night with calls from medicine but one rarely has to go in. The workload is steady but nothing soul crushing. One has more than enough time to study. There was plenty of didactic teaching during conferences and attendings take time to teach.

Both programs give good training. The fellows in both programs are generally happy. San Antonio and the DC area are very different culturally speaking as well as cost of living. That tends to be the key differentiating factor in where one would choose. Those from the northeast and upper midwest would rather be at WRNMMC. Those from the south, plain states and southwest prefer SAMMC.

Start doing some research that's GI related. Present at ACP conferences when you can.

I'd go to BAMC rather than Bethesda just because of the d@mn parking. But it really isn't up to you. You have to rank both and your preference doesn't have much relevance. I'd also rank the Navy programs. You never know.

Can Army folks really get Navy GI fellowships? Has this ever happened/ is it at all likely or is it more "can't hurt to list them but won't really change anything"?
