Hi all,

Has anyone here participated in the Army's Health Professions Scholarship Program? If not, have you heard anything about this program? Please advise.

Thanks!

I did and found it to be a great experience. Try searching for previous posts for some of the details.

Whats the timeline for applying to the program? Before you enter optometry school? during your first year? I did a search in the forums, but had a hard time finding a bit more detailed info. thanks!

I too would like to know more about this

While the military route is a great option for some, it requires immense dedication and desire. As many have said before, DO NOT do it for the financial advantage. The military is not just a job- it is a lifestyle. Keep all of this in mind as you learn more. Find the "Military" forum in the general medicine section; you will learn almost everything there is to know. If you have any specific questions- feel free to contact me. Best of luck...

From what I remember, you want to apply about a year before the year you want them to pay for. So if you want them to pay for all 4 years, you typically apply the same time you apply to the schools, the fall before matriculation. If you want them to pay for the last 3 years, you apply during 1st year.

You can get more info and check my facts @

I'm currently doing the Army HPSP for optometry. Feel free to check out my website - I have a blog that includes entries about the training you get during the summer too.

By the way, don't base your impression of the military from the Military Medicine forum - they're pretty negative there and from what I saw firsthand based on my Army optometry internship, I'm pretty sure that Army optometry is not quite as bad as what our Army MD counterparts in that forum make it as.

Well put, alferec... It does indeed seem that the MD couterparts in the Military Forum are quite negative. I apologize for not including that point in my last post. Take it all with a massive grain of salt!

I know the HPSP covers 100% tuition, but what about on campus living expenses?

The scholarship also provides a monthly stipend for living expenses. Currently, its around $1,900/mth.
