Hello! I am in the midst of applying to HPSP for the Army. I wanted some information regarding the military match, deployment, and moving experience. I have a strong interest in neurology, neurotrauma to be exact, so I want to know the odds of matching into a neurology residency right after medical school without GMO service. I also wanted to know how often are army doctors deployed and for how long? Lastly, how long are attending active duty physicians required to move appointments, I am definitely okay with relocating but I don't particularly want to relocate every two years so just wanted clarification, thanks 🙂

Currently, AD deployments are generally 9 months. But, depending on the commander calling the shots and/or your specialty's consultant, you may be able to split it with another AD doc and deploy for 4.5 months. Also, you could fill a 90 day slot in the place of a reservist. Your consultant is a senior doc in the army in your specialty that advises the surgeon general on everything that pertains to your specialty. Some are great, some suck, most are in the middle. Not the guy to piss off.

How often depends on your specialty, your consultant, and internal politics. I have a specialty surgeon friend that deployed for 4.5 months and less than a year later, deployed for almost six months. All the while, the doc sending him has never deployed, despite being in the army longer.

PCS (Permanent Change of Station, AKA moving) in the army is generally every three years, but depends on your specialty, consultant, and 'needs of the Army'. Be ready mentally to move every three years.
