ARMY Med/Peds

Hey everybody. Just wondering if any of you active duty Army docs out there know if they have med/peds docs in the service. I'm pretty interested in med/peds so far but would hate to decide to do it but have no option of actually practicing med/peds in the Army (as opposed to one or the other alone). My local recruiter is pretty much useless for this type of information. Thanks.

Not Army, but the bottom line of Med/Peds in the DoD is that they typically end up practicing as one or the other as primary with a dabbling in the other. IM tends to be a greater need, so you will most likely be doing that more. The problem is that there are no Med/Peds specific jobs in the DoD. Fam Med is where you get to do both. (in some places.)

All true. The Army has no dedicated med/peds residencies (nor should they, IMHO), but there are people who do two residencies. It's conceivable that you could do the residencies separately, but you would still end up having to choose one or the other. And you would certainly only get paid as being one or the other. The Army would expect you to serve in the specialty that you trained in most recently. Otherwise, they wouldn't have sent an attending physician back into training.

I was wondering if anyone had some advice for me (Army).

My ultimate goal is to become a Pediatric Cardiologist. I understand that first I must do a residency and that there is a good chance I will serve after residency before my application for a cardiology fellowship is accepted.

I wanted to do Med/peds so that I could be an Internal med doc but then switch to peds cardio when able.

Since Army doesnt do med/peds would it be best to pick a pediatric residency , or should I attempt to do two residencies and follow with my initial plan?

On that note, is there even a cardio or peds cardio fellowship available from the Army?

Thanks for any advice, I'm adjusting to the medical military world and my school doesnt have much information to help out!

if you really want peds cardiology, have not accepted a military scholarship or payment yet, and you want to serve in the military I would wait till you complete medical school, residency and fellowship prior to inquiring about joining mil med.

That way you get to train in the specialty and sub-specialty that you want rather than do a mil med residency in peds, and then utilization tour or even a gmo, apply for fellowship (and hope to get it).
