hey everyone,

i am currently a 2nd lieutenant in the new jersey army national guard. next year i'll be going to medical school. i know the nj army guard pays for 100% tuition if the school is in-state. i have been trying to find other states that offer this same benefit, but have been unsuccessful so far. i know i can use federal tuition assistance, but this does not offer much in terms of money. the other problem is that many schools are private, especially osteopathic schools. does anyone know of other states for certain that will pay 100% tuition for state schools or will help offset the cost of tuition for private schools (i.e. loan repayment but NOT stipends, etc.)?

thanks in advance.

Try this link. It shows each state and what they offer Guardsmen. If something looks promising, I'd check with the state to make sure medical schools aren't excluded in the fine print anywhere.

Btw, how are you handling the possibility of deployment while in medical school?

Were you commissioned on or after 1 April, 2008? If so, you will be elligible for ASR next year.

notdeadyet, thanks for the link. i don't believe deployment during med school is a possibility- at least that's what i was told by the amedd recruiter. have you heard differently?

amindwalker, i was commissioned on dec 22, 2007, so i guess that makes me ineligible for asr next year, correct?

If you're in the ASR program, you can not be deployed during medical school, but if you're in a regular line unit in the National Guard you can be. Maybe there are programs where they won't deploy you, but they definitely will pull people out of medical school from drilling guard unless they're in a special program that forbids it. I know ASR does. I didn't know there were others.

Not true, I was commissioned in July 06 and am doing it right now

I was commissioned on 28 December, 2007. I joined FOR the ASR program, but when it finally went through, I was initially denied because I was commissioned prior to 1 April, 2008. A bunch of Sierra Hotel officers went to bat on my behalf and I got an exception to policy.

Tiger26 - Outstanding! That's really good news for all of us. Did you have to get an exception to policy or was there no problem at all? Was your commission in '06 a direct AMEDD commission?
