Army Neurology? Competitive?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am interested in Neurology and I was wondering if anybody knows about the competitiveness of the residency. Thanks in advance.

Varies from year to year but generally not very competitive. Some years the slots don't all fill, the next year there may be one or two more applicants than there are slots. Occasionally the program director and dept chief can twist someone's arm and get an additional slot allocated if they really want someone "extra." A solid med student rotation should get you accepted to one of the programs.

RMD Neuro? My brain hurts!!!!!

Are there published stats for Army programs we can check out for different program fill rates, etc.?

Not that I'm aware of. I guess you could kill some time surfing google or something. Or if you REALLY want to waste time, file a Freedom of Information Act request with the Surgeon General's office requesting the info -- you might get it by the time you finish med school.

Look, we're talking ARMY NEUROLOGY here . . . There are only two programs -- 6 or 7 spots a year total that don't even fill consistently. I think your "n" value for statistical analysis is pretty minimal. If you're really interested in the programs, call the neurology program directors at Reed and Madigan -- they'd probably love to know that someone is interested.

A graduate of my school matched neurology a few years ago at WRAMC and has been happy with the program. I can't tell you anything about life as an attending neurologist, however, especially at the smaller Army hospitals.

Good advice. Every PD I've contacted so far (in multiple specialties) has been more than happy to answer my questions.

Thanks for all of your help. I've contacted the director at WR and am looking forward to rotating through both WR and Madigan next year. There doesn't seem to be too many people interested in Neurology (is that a sign?🙄 ) so I haven't been able to get a good feel for the quality of life and/or enjoyment for the job that an Army Neurologist may have. It doesn't help that I haven't rotated through Neuro yet (although I've made contact with several Neuro docs and will be doing some shadowing - our school doesn't do Neuro rotations until 4th year), but I think this is what I want to do.
This forum has been very helpful, even as a prior service med student. Any further advice is greatly appreciated.

the current state is this, if you have a pulse, you will match. You have a whopping two programs to choose from. plus/minuses of both, If you'd like to hear the plus/minuses of MAMC, then PM me and I will fill you in.
