ARMY vs. NAVY

Your question doesn't make any sense. It won't matter if your an MD or DO. There's no discrimination between the two in any branch of the military. I'm personally going the Navy route but not HPSP-I'm going to USUHS this august. My advice for you is to talk to some recruiters and discuss your options. Personally I would choose Navy. Although the Army uniforms are pretty cool.

I have served within both the Navy and the Army medical departments, and I must say that the Army is the better way to go. The Navy is terrible at granting residency opportunities, but the Army will never force you to be a GMO. The Army has more DO's and has recently had a DO as the Surgeon General. The Navy is still the good old boy club and even though they have DO's, it just ins't like the Army. Navy Medicine is also a nice tour of the world though, and you can serve with the Marines without having to live up to the physical standards that they require.

IT all depends on what you like and where you want to go. I liked the Army the best. It had everything I wanted-- I personally hope I match in one of their residencies. I like where their large teaching hospitals are. Do whatever you want-- just remember-- all being equal, there is more different things to do in the Army than in the Air Force or navy.

Listen real close.
If you want to be a generalist and not a specialist, go A-I-R-F-O-R-C-E. If you plan on specializing, A-R-M-Y-T-R-A-I-N-I-N-G is your best bet. Go to any Air Force Medical center and ask, they will tell you that the AF tends to favor generalization because the size of their service and the proportionate number of physicians require it. Now go to any Army Medical center and you will find just about every available specialty. Now that I think about it, I have only heard of Doctors in the Army who WANT TO, being any where near mud after OBC so I would even chage the previous recommendation for the USAF and say that even if you want generalize you should go Army because at least then you would still have the opportunity to expand. Just my two cents worth, and of course you must know I am biased.

I have never heard of one service having much more respect than any other branch. Army physicians are just as good as AirForce Doctors. I have been on militay posts in both the Army and Air force and I cannot say that there is much difference in the way officers are treated or the quality of food. This is food issue is rather silly-- An officer (especailly a Physician)can eat anywhere he feels like. Besides where is the Physician usually going to eat? in the Dining Hall of the Hospital-- It does not change much from service to service. Any way this is a mundane point-- do not listen to recruiters, listen to yourself-- If you feel like going one way I sugggest you go that way. It really makes no difference to me. Just remember--The Army does have more, does more, and publishes more. They have more residencies, large training hospitals in good locations, Fellowships and experienced attendings.

Thank you to all those supporting the army and negating the air force, but I still have to be honest with you, I have no desire to play GI Joe at this point in my life. No matter what, in the army, you're a soldier first. I've been told this first hand. And while I appreciate the input from all recruiters, let's face it, you are biased, and not all recruiters are overly......open. At least that's the stereotype, certainly not true for everyone.
I can see my A-I-R-F-O-R-C-E post really riled some feathers, esp. those who take life a little too seriously. L-I-G-H-T-E-N-U-P!! It was a playful jag, not worth the correction that some of you felt was needed. Which branch of service you decide to choose is based entirely on personal choice. Each branch is equally valid. The Air Force works for me and so obviously I'm going to support it 100%, just like you would support your alumni football team. So, once again, I reapeat:
