Art Portfolio to an Interview??

hey guys so i was thinking of bringing my art portfolio to the interview cause a uop admissions coordinator said it is ok. I was hoping to show "evidence of manual dexterity"

My dilemma is.. type of art i produce has a history of being hated on by everyone

Could you guys take a look and tell me HOW YOU WILL JUDGE ME IF U SAW THIS?

Definitely bring it. Any edge is good.
 
Definitely art. It's not like you picked the side of some random building to be your canvas (The Boondock's has a great episode!). It looks great and is art for sure. Bring it!

LOVE BOONDOCKS LOL and thnx for the compliment 🙂 but Im going to get more people's advice before actually bringing it.... I have a complex of people mis-judging me just caz i paint with a spray paint!
 
I think it's legit! That sculpture stuff is pretty cool too. As a collection, it's obvious you're an artist.

They're the ones who ask about dexterity on the application and look at silly PAT scores. Are either really an indicator of our success as dental students or dentists? Who knows? We just play the game. But his work showcases both.

I'd argue that this isn't even about those things anyway. If it comes up and he has an opportunity to talk about it, showing excitement and passion for something (surely we can love more than just teeth) that takes skill and dedication can never hurt. I think I'd get to see the real KenKim's personality just a little better as he spoke about something he enjoys and is knowledgeable about. Or we can just keep spewing the canned answers about how we want to help people and share our 10-yr plan and swear that we would turn in our best friend for cheating.
 
I am taking my photography portfolio 😀 I think this is great idea.
 
yeah last year i brought my guitar and amp and shredded it up during my interviews. it was awesome. everyone was impressed.

They might also think he/she is more interested in art than dentistry. As for dexterity, they probably just want to know whether or not the applicant has one of each hand rather than two of one.

Dentistry is artistry. its funny how you guys talk about something other than trying to answer my question LOL is it a yay or nay
 
Debating on wether if it would be looked at as art or a show of manual dexterity is essential to our decision on wether you should bring it or not.

You pretty much just told us that we should just give you an answer, and not explain why or defend it. The answer then becomes just as useless as no answer. Now I'm a philosopher :laugh: Maybe dental school isn't for me

It's also funny how you think that. Dentistry has an element of art in it, but far from being just that. Otherwise, why are artists on the street of NYC selling name-paintings for $20 and dentist are doing cleanings for $100?

Yes, having manual dexterity is very important, but manual dexterity does not equal art... Actually totally different things if you ask me. Unless you are going to be painting pictures on your patients central incisor, then Dentistry =/ Artistry.

And, the fact that you said that means you are pretty convinced in bringing that portfolio to the interview anyway, you just wanted more people on SDN to agree with you so you feel more confident. It doesn't matter what we think, but what you want. You should have confidence in your own decisions, not ours. And... it's not like you like our opinions (discussion on what it represent, art of show of manual dexterity) anyway
 
Yes bring it. Just don't put the ones with the painting on the mirror or stuff like that haha. Also, I would emphasize the ones where you were drawing with a pencil over the "graffiti" ones.
