I am thinking of becoming an OT.

My undergrad is in Studio Arts, though; and I have a pretty low GPA: 3.2.

I haven't graduated from undergrad yet and I haven't taken the GRE yet.

What do you guys think my chances are for CSUDH, perhaps some other school in SoCal, USC, NYU?

I haven't started on prereq's yet, though. I'm hoping to take Anatomy w/Lab this summer and Abnormal Psych next semester.

These are the courses I would have left to do:
Statistics,
Life Span,
Physiology,
(Possibly Physiology II for NYU? or Medical Terminology for USC?)

Would you guys suggest taking these last three courses all in ONE semester?

I want to get these done as soon as possible after my graduation from my undergrad.

I want to start grad school as soon as possible as well.

I know I seem like I am in a rush, but I kinda am. Hahah.

I already wasted 1.5 years more in undergrad by twiddlin' my thumbs and trying to figure out what I want to do.

Thanks for the help, if you offer any

Hi- I'm pretty sure all the schools you mentioned (CSU, USC, NYU...) and pretty much all schools in NY and CA ask for A&P I and II. Also I'm not sure if you have volunteers hours with an OT but you definitely need a minimum of 50hrs to be considered anywhere regardless of if they say they require it or not- bc you will apply along with people who have 4.0 GPA and thousands of volunteer hours. It takes a long time to prepare to apply - I'm applying this fall and I started last October for pre-req/volunteer... And I will still be missing a couple of pre-req. also get in touch with those programs, ask questions... So they know who you are and you will get more accurate answers from them.

Good luck 🙂

You can definitly take those three prereqs in one semester. Lifespan and stats shouldn't be too bad.

You said that you are considering taking Physiology II for NYU, I think if you take anatomy and physiology as separate classes you probably wont need to take Physiology II (but check on that, I am not 100% certain).

Why are you waiting until you graduate to complete your prerequisite courses? You should try to get as much of them done while you are still in school as possible. You are allowed to apply with outstanding prereqs, but it does you a big disadvantage if you have more than two left before you apply. So get them done ASAP so it doesnt hinder your application.

Studio Arts is a great undergrad for OT. OT really appreciates people who are creative and able to make things. Play up your creative side when you talk to schools and write your applications. It is not as unrelated as you think it is.

You do need to get experience hours. Obviously try to do as many as possible in as many places as possible. I would recommend going to at least two different places for an extended period of time ( at least 15 hours each). In an ideal world you would have at least 100 hours, but if you can't do that, you can't do that (and you can still get in somewhere).

It is difficult to evaluate gpa without knowing what school you went to, but it shouldn't disqualify you. Especially as studio classes (from what I understand from friends) are really hard and either 'eh' grades or create such a time strain that it is hard to preform well in other classes. Just do well in your prereqs (most schools calculate separate prereq grades that count more than the cumulative gpa)
