This article from Annals speaks to the question of EM docs burning out at a higher rate than other kinds of doctors.

Their conclusion:
Despite the high stress and demands of emergency medicine, overall attrition remains low and compares favorably with that of other medical specialties. These data have positive implications for the emergency physician workforce and are important for accurate estimation of and planning for emergency physician workforce needs.

That was kind of a fun article. IIRC, there's a reporting lag of a few years with that database and it doesn't account for people working in EM who aren't EM boarded. But the former balances out over the long time span that the study covers. The latter would interesting - what was the attrition of either non-boarded, or non-EM residency trained, docs working in EDs over the same time period?

In any case, this will be one that I'll use on my non-EM attendings to bust the myth of "burnout".

I find that burn-out can help on those chilly nights, but patients tend to look at you funny when they see the char-marks around the edge of your white coat.......
