I was wondering if i should put cooking and photography as artistic endeavors or hobbies?

Photography -- I had work presented within the art department, volunteered as a darkroom lab technician and sold graduation photos.
Cooking -- We invited friends and friends of friends to our house to host dinner parties. We cooked different recipes and taught each other cooking techniques that we are not familiar with. I also taught friends how to cook cheap and simple meals so they are not surviving on just ramen.

I believe becauase you presented the photography to a wider audience you can put that as artistic endevour. Alternatively hobby would work.

The cooking is definitely hobby.

IMO, both can be listed under Artistic Endeavor, as both art forms are shared with a wider audience. Hobbies works as well, and you don't need to list a Contact.

Gotcha. I think I will just put them both as hobbies so it does not take up too much room.

Go for it! I still do photography on the side when I have the chance (though mostly dogs). I did non-clinical volunteering by doing free photography work for charitable organizations. It was great! A stark contrast to my clinical volunteer work that sucked. I suggest you try to find some photography volunteer work beyond the darkroom lab technician. It will be fun, and you will be genuinely passionate about it when talking with ADCOMs.

I realized that I wrote too much for cooking so I think I will separate photography and put it as an artistic endeavor. Yea I have been doing free photography for a lot of my friends that could not afford graduation photos and post cards for their family. I think photography is an amazing media as it is so flexible! I just moved back home but I'll definitely look for photography volunteering. I did a project in high school where we went to Bhutan to teach kids how to take photos so they can try to express certain emotions. I had a blast working with them and learning what they fear or dream about. It was quite a contrast to American children's dreams and fears.

Could I ask you how you reached out to these organizations? Did you have a connection or did you send out a cold email?

Hey, those all sound awesome! And you're talking about it passionately here. Just translate this over to interviews, and you should be golden. I had connections where I ended up doing the volunteer work. You can try cold emailing and showing them some of your portfolio.

I was just browsing and found a few opportunities already! I honestly have never actually looked into photographer volunteer positions but I found a few that look promising. It ranged from rescue animals to civil air patrol but I am going to explore further to find the perfect fit.

That's awesome! These days I'm mostly doing dog photography. Before I started residency, I did some paid shoots for "friends," and got totally snubbed. At least dogs won't snub you! Either of those things would be amazing! Also, if your finances aren't too tight, it's a great time to go into mirrorless cameras unless you already have one!

I love that photo! I think I might do some rescue animal volunteer work. I have always wanted a dog but a family member is allergic and I do not know if I have time to take care of a dog during my application cycle/medical school (if I get in).

Wait I was thinking. Is there a possibility I can put my photography as volunteering since volunteered as a dark room tech (70hrs) and did a few graduation photoshoots for free? Or should I just mentioned that within the artistic endeavor since photography has been a on going passion (almost 10 years)

Also I would love to get a mirrorless (sony a7II or a7II to be exact) but I cant afford it right now. Just had to lend money to family for a house issue so I do not have money laying around. I am currently happy shooting with a used 5D MK II right now, but there is always the temptation for new and shinier things. However, I did recently buy a drone to do some aerial photography.

Thanks! He's awesome. 🙂 You can try getting a Doodle. They are more "hypoallergenic" than other breeds, whatever that means. I probably would hold off on getting a dog until maybe MS-3 or even later. It's tough to find time for yourself, let alone a dog in medical school!

It depends on where this darkroom was. Was it for a non-profit or charitable organization? I remember a non-traditional pre-med posting a while back and was asking if they could count their unpaid internship hours in finance as volunteering, which it's not. Not getting paid =/= volunteering. I'd probably say this has been an artistic endeavor and you can clearly speak passionately about it!

Nice, I have a Canon EOS 6D and Sony A99, both original variants. Both the manual viewfinder and EVF have their uses. When it comes to dynamic range, the Sony A99 is really something else. If I had more money and wanted to avoid my wife murdering me, I'd totally get an A7III.

Yea I realized that having a dog would not be the best currently, as I would not be able to take care of it properly nor will I have a backyard for the dog to run around. I was planning on having a husky or a big dog so a backyard is essential.

Yea I decided to leave it as an artistic endeavor. Should I list someone that works in the art department as the contact person?

What appeals to me the most is the portability and weight of the A7. My 5D is quite heavy so it is less than ideal when I go backpacking or when I travel around.

Oh yeah, and a Husky is not the dog you'd want to have in this situation. I love them to death, but they are a lot of work and definitely require a big yard and daily exercise.

Yeah that's what I would do.

Agreed. An A7 would be a nice camera to buy eventually, or maybe even the Canon EOS RP.
