Just found out my abstract got accepted for a paper presentation. I have never been to ARVO before and have always heard everyone just wears hawaiian shorts and sandels. What about presenting a paper, should I wear a suit, just a tie, or not even that? When I went to AAO, seemed like everyone was in a suit.

Also anyone with experience presenting a paper at ARVO, what it is like and how it went? thanks

ARVO meetingis far better than AAO. If you are presenting paper you should be dressed (pant-shirt). suit not required... other than that move around in slippers, shorts whatever...
enjoy the meeting... I love going to ARVO.. haven't been in the last 2 years!!
BTW congratulations for ur paper....be prepared for questions...the audience is too smart and intelligent.

I had a paper presentation last year. I think I wore a suit. You have 15 min for your ppt and questions. Ideally you leave 5 min for questions.



What topic area was your paper accepted into? Be prepared to answer questions from experts in the field.

I would make sure you have your presentation knocked out before attending so that you can enjoy the conference.

wait, so if i only have a poster at arvo, i can just wear casual clothes? Do I need to stay by my poster the whole day?

you are required to be at your poster for the designated time of your specialty poster session and that day's all poster session.

For poster presentations, you only have to be at your poster for about 2.5 hours total (as 4424 said, an hour or so during the all posters session and 1.5 hours during your poster group's time slot).

As far as what to wear, you'll see everything from suits to hawaii shirts with shorts and sandals. I personally think it's poor form to wear casual clothes when you're presenting, but you'll see plenty of people doing it. A suit is probably not necessary, but a shirt and tie with slacks, i.e., business casual, is appropriate.

For paper presentations, go with professional dress unless you are an uber-expert in the field, in which case you can wear whatever you want 🙂

I agree with formal/semiformal for paper presentation, casual for posters and everything else. No need to risk attracting negative attention at this point in our careers, as unlikely as that may be.
