As a Caribbean IMG, what can a score of low 240s make me eligible for?

Or if there is a link to some facts/data that'd be appreciated as well. Got my score today, pretty disappointed (I know it's not a terrible score by any means but expected higher). Anyways, any help would be appreciated, just sorta want to know what residencies to completely discard and not worry about anymore.

Thanks and good luck with your studying/scores!

Too early on to tell. The rest of your application will play a huge role. 2CK also plays a big role for internationals. But in short: one of my friends who's an IMG just matched at Yale (I won't say the field for privacy reasons). And he scored 240s.

Hi ,

Can you elaborate what " rest of application " exactly means ? I mean what are the specific things which will influence our chances of matching...

Thank you for your reply Phloston. Always nice to read your advice. Yeah, definitely, the step 1 is just one portion of the application but just wanted to ensure no doors are closed for me (some may not open for sure)

Essentially Step 2 CK score, Step 2 CS first time pass, Step 3 even, Letters of reference, research (if required), and in general how the program director perceives you I guess (if they know you, I'm sure it helps!)

A 240 as a Caribbean IMG does not really open any doors for you. What it does is (assuming you meet or exceed that score on Step 2) ensure that you will match, somewhere, in something. You're basically eligible for the same programs that any carib IMG can get, which involves all of the primary care specialties, surgery, radiology, anesthesia, PM&R, and a few other things.

It is definitely a good score, but basically it just gives you some sense of security that you wouldn't have had if you scored <220 on the exam. If you're looking to do something really competitive, you'll need to kill your CK, obviously pass CS first attempt... and then probably do a year(s) of research in order to get into your desired field... or if you happen to know someone high up, then having a 240 makes it easier for them to use a residency spot on you if it's a competitive field or a competitive program.

Ok that's reassuring. I'm definitely going to try and get 250+ on CK and everything you said holds true as well! It is certainly a combination of lots of things. Hopefully in 2 more years there will be good news.
