Greetings,
I am an international student from Vietnam in the process of applying to Pharmacy schools. I want to ask current pharmacy students who are also international students. After graduating from US pharmacy schools, what is the chance of getting H1B visa if you want to practice as a pharmacist in the States. Four years tuition in pharmacy school is really expensive, I wish to know my chance to get a job here.
Thank you in advance,

Hopefully slim to none in the future. I'd prefer it on the none side. Welcome to SDN.:meanie:

In 07 my friend was able to get walgreens to sponsor him, but it wasn't easy and he interned for them. He tried cvs and hospitals and no one would sponsor. I am sure it is worse now. If you met him you wouldn't even know he was a foreigner. Why would a company go through all the legal hoops to hire a foreigner when there are plenty of applicants that are us citizens. My advice to you is if you do pursue pharmacy is find a place that sponored in the past and intern for them and give 300% and kiss a lot of ass.

It will depend on the location. For instance, you cannot get an H1-B visa to be a pharmacist in the state of Illinois, but you can get one for Wisconsin.

I am in the process of applying to pharmacy school right now. The application fee, interview and tuition fee (if I can get in) are all very expensive. This is a huge investment, it's terrible if you couldn't find a job after that.
Previous replies really worried me a lot. I am sure there are international student who are currently in pharmacy schools and probably looking for job in the States. Can you guys share with me some of your experience or of your friend who can get practice as a pharmacist here? Thanks a lot.

why did i think of swine flu when i say you topic?

I met an international student who had to go back to his home country after he did his residency at UIC because he could not get a green card. He really wanted to stay in the US but did not have authorization to work after his residency was over. So he had to go back after his schooling was done. This was back in 2002.

yeah, with the economy and the number of graduates, dont count on being able to stay

I don't know how much pharmacists make in VN but the pharmacist title is highly prestigious there (I'm also from there and immigrated here long time ago), especially with a degree from the US, you'll be outstanding. You can have your own pharmacy there easily and make tons of $$.

Your other options are to marry someone from here, or try to immigrate to Canada through the skilled worker program. My husband immigrated to Canada a while back, he had a computer science degree from China and barely spoke English but he made it. Good luck.

I know people who graduated from my school last year and CVS sponsored their green card immediately!

Thank you so much for all of your replies. I'll try hard, because I believe this is really what I want to do. Good luck to everyone.
