The ascp survey on jobs in pathology:
http://www.ascp.org/member/resident/surveys/job-survey-04.asp
is a bait to attract med students under debt to apply to pathology since there are several lacunae:
1. SMALL survey size: "The survey was e-mailed in mid-May to 148 final-year residents for whom ASCP had e-mail addresses. We also asked ASCP Resident Liaisons to encourage their students to fill out the survey. A total of 67 surveys were returned." -> now, 67 is a VERY VERY small size to represent 2500 residents in training every year.
2. it was responded by BOTH fellows and residents... if AP fellows can have the going so tough then what to talk about residents who did only 2 years of AP training only....
3. The total number of residents who did not receive a job offer (+/- interview) was 16.7%... imagine, being stuck at the end of 4 y training without a job offer... thats huge 1 in 5.
4. All of the respondents were asked to rate a series of issues regarding the importance in seeking employment in the current job market. Least important were opportunity to do research, fiscal pressures (loan repayment, etc...), and opportunities to teach.. imagine... how can the debt and research be a small significance in an academic field like pathology?
5. 84% received at least one job offer. This is a 11% decreased from the preceding year (95%), but is not reflected in the number of job offers per respondent do to an increase in the number of respondents who had more than one job offer (60% vs 57% in 2002). This could indicate a tighter more competitive market when compared to 2002.
and, about the chances of 'baby boomer' pathologists retiring... all i can say that everybody can work in this field till he can see the scope.....
