I did a hospital placement in Tanzania last summer through a UK program. I can now get a certificate from ASDAN (Award Scheme Development and Accreditation Network), which is a UK non-profit that, basically, certifies that summer programs and other experiential learning programs are legit and at least minimally meaningful. I'd not previously heard of it, and since I'm American and plan to matriculate to med school in the US, I was wondering if it was worth spending $80 for the certificate. Any thoughts?

I am really inclined to say that it's not worth the money. Spending time to perfectly craft your blurb on AMCAS about how the activity was significant and meaningful is much more important. There is so little space, that talking about how ASDAN makes it legit is stupid. ADCOMs (speaking out of my you know what) don't care about that. They care about how your experiences have shaped and influenced you. It doesn't matter what you do, but how you do things. Of course there will be some activities and awards that are better than others, but this is not one of them..though it still sounds like an amazing experience.
