Hey Guys,

Congrats to all those who got accepted and Good Luck to those still waiting.

I am torn between these two schools as my top choice. I would love for any input. I am in state for Florida but I would love to move to the west coast but picking ASDOH will mean I will not have my family and it is also a private school. I really loved ASDOH when I interviewed but I just don’t know about the town. UF is way cheaper for me to attend and they have an awesome program. If any of you have any advice I would love to hear your personal experience at either school if you have or are currently attending them.

Thanks and Happy Holidays to all!

Congrats on your acceptances! You will have to ask yourself if you can do well being far from your family. I have met students that were not able to focus and broke down after moving across the country. I don't know too much about UF, but I think in-state tuition would be nice if cost is a major concern for you.

ASDOH is my top choice :xf: because its public health/ community dentistry emphasis is unique to the nation and its my goal to go pursuit public health dentistry. However, there isn't much to do around town compared to Florida. Don't forget AZ is in a different timezone and not on a coast (no beach!) In addition, it is HOT (110+) during the summer!

Desert<Waiting for Steve Addazio to be fired so Gator football is no longer painful to watch.

Plus if you go to AZ, you won't have muggy hot days, just miserably dry hot ones.

The choice is clear 🙂

Well having lived in Gainesville/Jax for a few years and now currently living in Mesa, AZ.... hopefully i can shed some light on the subject for you.

Personally i would for sure go to UF, only on the basis of tuition alone. You will save well over a 100K when you factor in interest. That is a ton of money, but if money is not a concern to you then here are other factors to think about.

I like the AZ heat a little more, than Florida heat/humidity, bottom line is they both suck. But in no way will you be getting a "west coast" feel. ASDOH is set up in a very suburban area, which may be good or bad. Transportation is very easy, no traffic, and living expenses are very, very reasonable. In fact if you wanted to buy a house/condo, you definitely could. Nice 3 and 4 bedrooms for around 800 a month. If not, lots of nice apartments around the school. You won't get a "campus" feel, especially coming from UF. However, if you like to party, ASU and Mill Avenue are just 20 minutes away. More clubs and bars than you can handle, i can also promise you won't be disappointed with AZ ladies. You also have Scottsdale, you can venture into. There is mountains here, unlike FL, so lots of outdoor stuff to do, tons of wake boarding, hiking, BBQ's etc. Snowboarding is like 3 hrs away. One plus about ASDOH, is you do have the dual MPH program. If you are interested in that, it can be a nice thing for your CV. Also a huge plus about the MPH, is that the program is through UNC, which is a big deal because UNC's MPH program is tied for 2nd in the nation with Harvard. ASDOH is pretty strong clinically and every time i have been there the students are always way chill.

You know all the pluses of Gainesville.... You got Jax Beaches, St. Aug, and Daytona all within a couple of hours. Sweet campus feel, sports teams, etc. I personally didn't like living in actual Gainesville, the infrastructure sucked, traffic was horrible, and i felt rent was way over priced. I also didn't like how you transitioned from a good neighborhood to ghetto so quickly there.

I think i would choose ASDOH for every reason, except tuition.... UF is a solid school, Gainesville isn't terrible, and you will save 100K+. UF is the smartest choice, but i think you would really like living in AZ.

Good luck and Congrats!!! 😀😀😀

Both seem like great schools. Obviously, The better school would be the cheaper tuition IMO. Then again, if you feel ASDOH is worth the extra 100k, that's your choice. Besides, moving isn't easy for everyone; therefore, staying in Florida would eliminate the possibility of struggling to adapt to a new environment - it can be quite challenging (from experience). Good luck with your decision!

Stay in Florida. It's nice out here (MWU-AZ) without the humidity, but taxes are higher, tuition is more expensive, there is no beach, it's far from family, and there is not a Publix grocery store (oh how I miss Publix...)! In the end, why would you pay 100k more for a comparable product? If I had gotten in to UF either time I had applied, I would have gone in a heartbeat.

Honestly Floss and Roll,

There really appears to be no more confusion on which you might want to pick, but since you asked...

If I had to choose between two very good programs, + and - for weather on both accounts, Florida being MUCH cheaper (which by the time you make up the 100,000.00 dollar difference it could take you an extra 10-15 years, who knows to repay) having a support system close during a very trying time (unless you can not stand your family-which is not the case it seems for you) familarity of Florida, not having to pay to move and bother with moving cross country nor changing any forms/drivers lic. paying to relicense your cars...etc, I do not see that you have much to consider anymore. In my view the plusses are much more on the Florida side that the Arizona side. Good luck in your decision, be curious to see which one you choose after this thread =]

So, I am not sure where the inexpensive places to live are near Mesa, but renting is actually very high. Yes buying a place you can get for cheaper, but then you have the unexpected costs of repair and who has the time and can you sell it. I honestly would not buy a house in the area for a few years. Houses are SO much cheaper because they are not selling and there are MANY on the market!!! I WOULD NOT BUY and I have owned my share of rentals/homes/acreage etc. I could not compare the bars, ladies, beaches because I have not ever been to FL, but I am sure you can find what you are looking for where ever you are going. The biggest considerations to you seems to be close family, great programs either way, Much cheaper at FL, what you are already familiar with, not having huge hassle of moving far away. I would choose FL for myself.
