When does everyone usually make hotel reservations and buy airline tickets? I was thinking about getting the airline ticket portion done now while they are cheap.

First meeting in new orleans since hurricane katrina.
I would wait until hurricane season to see how it plays out.

Talk to your school first to find out how long they'll allow you to take off rotations.

They usually allow you to take 3 days off at the most, but if my calculations are correct, I should be done with my rotations by that time. I only have to take Ambulatory Care, Public Health, and two more electives (one of the electives can be replaced by a didactic elective which I'd take in January). So, September, October, November, I should be set and would have December off anyways if all goes well.

Cheap tickets? Last time I checked, it wasn't that cheap. As gas prices fall, I hope airline ticket prices will fall as well.

Going to drive there =D

but Still have to register =(

Good idea; because for my med school interviews I may need to take a week (!!) off for interviews! Sporadic days here and there too :(

GL TC; I know you said you had an uphill battle and I want to know how it turns out.

I'm kind of annoyed both apha and ashp are in new orleans this year. I wanted to check out a couple different cities! But yeah, I think I will just book tickets for both ashp and apha at the same time.

Well, the good thing about APhA being in New Orleans is that it's gonna be around Mardi Gras. PARTY TIME!

New Orleans is one of my favorite cities ever. Great history, food, drinking, people...super cheap, and even a casino! My only issue was no bank of America and it was hard to maintain my Starbucks addiction. Very excited to go to midyear...

Everything's booked for us. We got a 2 bedroom + living room suite nearby + airfare (<$250 RT from PHL).

We were explicitly told ASHP attendance is excused before rotations started, and seeing as our preceptors during that block will be there also, I felt fine booking everything.

That's an awesome deal. Which hotel? And was this at a group rate?

I started booking my stuff around September/October last year. But I'm not really sure in what time frame tickets would be cheapest.

I don't want to sound like your creepy stalker or anything, but I remember you saying you didn't match last year. What did you end up doing in the interim? Retail? Just curious...trying to make some plans for my future, in case I don't match.

For people who have gone to Mid-Year in previous years, do students typically stay for the entire time. Like this year it is December 4-8. Is there any point in staying until the 8th? I don't see anything other than random exhibits and whatnot on the 7th and 8th?

Also, are there parties and socials at the ASHP Midyear like how they have at the APhA annual meeting?

I know USP and Temple only allow 3 days missed for midyear if you're on rotation at the time, so I know we're all going December 3-7 or 4-7. You can just explore New Orleans in the morning of the 7th and then get an evening flight. By the way, if you haven't booked yet, seems like prices are going up, so it's better to do it ASAP.

Also, if you like to save money and aren't paranoid, look around at deals that aren't on the ASHP website. I booked a hotel for $79 for a 2 double bed room per night (including taxes). Granted that this is not the best place in New Orleans, I also saw nice hotels, one with an airport shuttle, for $120/night or less. You just have to look around at what's available. For flights, it seems like it's good to look at the flight prices over a few and on multiple websites days before buying, since prices fluctuate so much. TripAdvisor is a good start for flight prices.

1. Nope. As a student, I left right after the showcase ended.

2. Yes! Most Rx schools have a reception for students/alumni every year, and there are a lot of drug rep dinners and industry parties. For example, in '09 one of the drug companies (I forget which one) had a party at Tao and CompleteRx had a party at the Hard Rock Hotel.

Yeah I booked my flight for ASHP Midyear but I gotta attend APhA's MRM2011 in Buffalo in October since I'm repping the school, lol.

The spring meeting or the fall meeting? The spring meeting is the one with the BCPS prep class, which won't be useful to you until next year. I've never been to the fall meeting so I don't know what it's about.
