Asians are overrepresented in most professional/graduate schools and thus have a harder time getting in than other races..

But from what I've read, Asians are underrepresented in vet school. I was wondering if this would give Asians a leg up on admissions? Would Asians applying to vet school be given the same advantages as say, a Hispanic person applying to vet school?

I believe they may be underpresented because in most asian countries they eat what we try to fix. Just like Argentina if you want a snack you eat some el cuy aka you're beloved guinea pig.

Seriously, who made you Queen of the pre-vet forum? You know they eat dogs and cats in china....it's science

The OP is a self proclaimed slacker who has yet to finish their first year of undergrad and is here asking if they will get some sort of advantage in applying to vet school since they feel they are an underrepresented minority.

This thread is going nowhere.

The reactions here are really sad. So I can't ask a simple question just because it pertains to race and admissions? Just answer the question, and stop attacking the questioner's motives. But I'm guessing most people in here are caucasian and have no idea.
Based on what I've researched it seems like Asians DO get a leg up in vet school, but I wanted to check.

Secondly, slacker or not, I have a 3.99 and I'm a junior. 🙂

you have good grades cuz your asian... AHAHahHA
im just kidding. Im allowed to say that because im yellow too 🙂

as far as vet school goes... I havent noticed having any sort of advantage as far as getting in... seeing as though this is the second time im applying.

It's true that asians do eat cats and dogs. Most don't give a **** about their pets. They're underrepresented for that reason.

There are lots of careers out there that pay loads more than for veterinarians and are "asian friendly". Stick with those.

There we go, you bring in race and we'll answer accordingly.

I'm fairly certain all non-caucasians are "under represented" in vet school in the US. Haven't looked at stats in a while but it is probably more of a culture thing (and no, I'm not talking 'they eat their pets' culture). I've talked to a few people from singapore and china who while their parents support them, they would rather see them go to med school or other 'better' profession.

We have a good percentage of asian students in my class, mainly from Singapore (without counting, at least as many as we have males in the class).

As for it being an advantage to be a minority to get into a vet program, I don't think it happens as often as many people think it does, certainly less often than people who use their connections (via LOR or otherwise) to get in.

to the OP:
wow. i'm sorry, but i must say your motives are quite horrible. why does it matter that asians have an advantage or not?! i personally think that all "potential vet students" be evaluated equally, and their races/ethnicities be void.

Case Scenario: a school is predominately Asian, i.e., and there was one spot open left and it was between you [asian] and a "minority" person. You have slightly better stats compared to the minority, in terms of GPA, experience, etc. So how unfair would it be if the Admissions board accepted the minority into the school instead of the you just because they are a minority? yeahhh...that's f c kin BULL right?!

although i'm sure maybe some admissions board does that [mayyybeee], it doesn't mean that you should see yourself as "oooo automatic get in bc i'm a minority".

if you're really that awesome, it shouldn't matter what race you are if you get accepted into Vet school. Your work should get you in, not your color.

and i'd like to add one more thing:

i am asian. yes, my country eats dogs and cats. i do have family members over in the mother country that have ate dogs and cats. no i will never eat a dog or cat. and no, i do not ever think about having an "asian" advantage [whether one exists or not] to getting into vet school. i think that's lame, stupid, and selfish, and hope to work my a s s of in school to make my own "super awesome stats applicant" advantage.

and to Mr. Cricket...
i actually DO give a s h i t about my dog, cause he is THE ****
and yes pets are underrepresented in manyyy countries. but hmm...i wonder why?? maybe it's because they live in a world where their daily salary can only provide food for their family for that one day. Who's going to spend hundreds on vaccines and dog toys and grooming for their pets, when they have a family to take care of? But what they are able to is to give the poor fella some scraps and bones and rice to eat. and lets the kids play with them on the streets. and a sheltar for when there's a storm outside. and although it's not much, that little something probably brightened up that dog's day :]

I'm pretty sure that race does not affect your chances of getting into any graduate or professional program. If it does, that's bull. I always feel a little bad saying that I don't support affirmative action because people think that it makes me racist. I don't believe in it because I have seen plenty of people from every background, race, religion, and sex excel in academics.

I think that this thread is getting a little scary though. It doesn't matter why the OP is asking what they're asking, that's no reason to attack them and stereotype people of asian descent. I would hope that the people I attend vet school with will be more open-minded and accepting than what I'm seeing in this thread.

i would like to apologize if i have offended anyone. i didn't really realize how nastily mean i sounded. I really AM sorry. it's finals weeks soon and we're all stressed...i had just gotten done with one of my exams and had much anger and stress and just put it all in that post. so therefore...désolé.

Why did anybody even bother to reply to this question anyway?

I don't think it's a bad question at all. Why are you people saying such negative and hurtful things?? Anyway, I talked to vets to get advice on applying to vet school. A lot of them said in the personal statement to do things that set you apart. Multiple vets said that it would be great if you could include something about your heritage....like if you were native american or something. So i'm sure it would get them to look closely at you, but if you don't have good grades, test scores, evaluations, and experiences, then you can forget it.

But I'm guessing most people in here are caucasian and have no idea.

We have no idea how it feels to be discriminated against? Affirmitive action has flipped the tables. I can not get a scholarship in my school because priority is given to miniorities. So yes I do know what it feels like.I do understand why they do it though. It is because the majority of minority students would not be able to afford school otherwise. But, there are a few minorities that could, just like there are some Caucasians who can not afford school (like me (I had to take everything out in loans no support from mommy or daddy) and quite a few other people I know). So just because I am Irish, Polish, Dutch, slight Cherokee Indian and a few other things mixed in, means I am less deserving of that scholarship or vet school admittance. Because 50-60 years ago my ancestors treated minorities badly means I have to pay the price? How is that right? Race should NOT matter. Do not look at your heritage as a way to help you. Instead focus on your grades, experience and GRE’s. Use your heritage for your personal statement or what makes you unique or what kind of multicultural understanding you have, but not to give you a better advantage. It is not right.

I say do whatever it takes to get into vet school. If your race gives you an advantage, then that's awesome! For caucasians like me....sucks to be us! I totally agree though that it isn't fair, especially if someone with a worse application gets in over me. I don't think that you should blame the minorities though. It isn't their fault! More power to them if they have an advantage. I know I would do anything to get into vet school.

HopefulAg, I have to say, that's the first ASCII facepalm I've seen.

Seriously, who made you Queen of the pre-vet forum? You know they eat dogs and cats in china....it's science

 by my definition, I wouldn't consider that science. I'd consider that a generalization (and an offensive one as well and I;m not Asian)

Taken from Ross University's website: "The University does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, gender, religion, disability, or age in admission to, access to, treatment in, or employment in its programs and activities."
I'd think that if schools did discriminate, there would be a higher percentage of males (~13.2% from Michigan State c/o 2013). If I do get into vet school, I want it to be because I earned it...and not based on anything else. I think that it's CRAP that someone could get a spot over me based simply on the fact that they have a different shade of skin. That opinion has changed a little bit since I first wanted to apply. I thought that if I could get a leg up because I'm a guy, then awesome. I know realize that that is a flawed view.
Asians, African Americans, Native Americans, Males, Females will all make great veterinarians and if you are planning on your heritage or sex to get you further in life, then you need to reevaluate things.

I declare twelvetigers queen of the forums. You have to listen to me because Im asian and asians are really smart.

All right! Where's my crown?

Wait, this isn't like Where the Wild Things Are, is it? You won't eat me if I do a bad job? I mean, I hear that Asians will eat ANYTHING...

Alright....Let me just jump on this. As one of the few, brave and quite bold. To all of those on SDN, please excuse me for being frank and possibly quite mean. But let me just start with this. Im black and female. You are sitting here asking us, as students for something as WHETHER you would have a better chance at getting into vet school? You are absolutely disgusting and one of the reasons why Im leaving this godforsaken country. Just because of the color of your skin you are expecting to get a leg up against HARD WORKING AND STRUGGLING PEOPLE? What makes you so special huh? We all have eyes, noses and brains. Nothing makes you any different from anyone else other than the fact that your family came from another country. Well Laddy DAH. Guess what? Yeah Minorities are under represented BUT IT IS PRIMARILY A CULTURAL THING (most do not want to work with animals). Why dont you take yourself outside and maybe look around and notice something interesting EVERYONE IS PEOPLE AND SHOULD BE TREATED THE SAME. Its not a HARD CONCEPT. It sucks things are sometimes harder for minorities that is also a cultural boundary we must face. But the fact of the matter is WE CANNOT GET ANY BETTER BY EXPECTING PEOPLE TO MAKE IT EASIER. That is an insult to our intelligence and once again segregation. I refuse to be treated any different from anyone else. And you should be grateful of the same. You should be happy for who you are and not looking for some damn cop out. Now Im going back to studying my plant phys and biochem. People like you shouldnt even be in any profession unless you change your views. Its those views that makes this world so godforsaken screwed up.

This thread is interesting, because I had spoken to my advisor (who is ASIAN, lol) about minorities in graduate and professional programs. He says that all schools have to say that they don't discriminate, etc. But, the fact of the matter is that it looks better for the school and administration if they appear to be more diverse culturally. So when apps are looked at in my grad program, for example, the reviewers can't say "We want this person because they are Asian" (or Indian, African American, ...whatever). But just because it isn't voiced out loud doesn't mean that the race factor doesn't come in to play. It's just the way it works, it seems. Best to focus on making your application the best it can be, and then it's out of your hands.

Wow you sure are smart, talking about things you don't know about. There's been many studies done on this. The Asian average is generally higher in top undergraduate schools and most professional and graduate schools (med, dental, engineering, etc).
Because of affirmative action, race has become a factor in admission whether we like it or not. Asians are essentially competing against other Asians, and Asians have higher scores not to mention we are overrepresented in higher education. So affirmative action sucks when you're Asian, I was just curious if vet school was the exception to the rule.

As for the "eating pets" comment... Pretty sad, way to be trashy guys. I can see some people on here are hicks, I'm guessing it's mostly the kids on here who grew up in rural areas tending to horses and cows and have never stepped outside the country. Maybe one day you'll grow out of your immaturity and ignorance.

I agree that people were being pretty ignorant, but don't stoop to their level and start calling people names.

don't generalize this forum based on one member who just signed up and has only posted 3 times -- all of which are of the same nature.

btw your response regarding "hicks" and slamming those who grew up in rural areas tending to horses and cows is just as classy as that member saying people in china eat animals.

the underlying message here is...maybe you should have made your first post as an introduction instead of jumping right in with a touchy subject. members might have been more receptive then and not jump to conclusions assuming you were a troll trying to stir up a heated debate to offend others.

Fair enough, point taken.

thank you. i am smart 😀 its not worth the effort to write something long. ive had enough of that with brodiatrist. you think its hard being a MINORITY (asian) and getting into programs/scholarships/etc??? try being caucasian and coming from uppermiddle class but still working your ass off to get good grades and still not get a scholarship or financial assistance because your parents make decent money, even though in reality they can not pay for everything for me and i already had to pay off some loans. You're competing with lots of smart asians, yes, BUT caucasians are competing with a TON more caucasians who are also just as smart as the asians you're competing with. are you saying that the asians you're competing with are smarter than the caucasians i have to compete with??

go back to your pre med program. race shouldnt be the reason you want to be in a career.

*Gasp* You eat popcorn? Think of the poor little popcornlets left orphaned! In my country, civilized people never stoop to such levels. :nono:

it's actually made me very, very hungry now. Hhhmmmm no popcorn in house, dog look good....

I just finished a 100 calorie pack of kettle corn popcorn! It was fantastic

Heh.

First of all, I think affirmative action is an unfortunate necessity, but I do I think it sucks for Asians - especially Asians who are not privileged.

What you don't seem to understand is statistics. Although there are more Caucasians in the U.S., schools want their student population to be as representative of the general population as possible. Thus, the fact that the Asian population is 5% for the general U.S. population but 10-25% (40%+ in UC schools.. lol) in higher education makes it much more competitive for Asians than any other race.

Studies on this show that if affirmative action was removed, Asians would benefit the most: Asian acceptance rates would go up while Caucasian acceptance rates would either stay constant or actually go down (depending on the school). Caucasians aren't extremely overrepresented in higher academia like Asians are. Asians are an overrepresented minority, not an underrepresented minority.

I am a stronger believer in accepting URM such as blacks and Hispanics. It's an unfortunate side effect that qualified Caucasian and especially Asian people will be overlooked. I wish there was a better system, but it's difficult to find a better one.

So here's the thing. Academically I'm good. I'm a smart person, a little lazy yeah, but I've got good numbers.

However it seems like medical schools want you to jump through so many hoops.

I don't mind volunteering at the hospital. I enjoy shadowing doctors and reading/talking about medicine. And I also enjoy volunteering at the animal shelter, cause I love animals.

But beyond that, I don't want to do ****. Research sounds boring. I don't feel like tutoring kids. I guess I don't have any outstanding hobbies. Now if I must do these things, I will. But I really, really don't want to. I'd rather spend my extra time sleeping or hanging out with friends.... I was wondering, if my stats are good, and I come off as a genuine person in my personal statement (genuinely interested and sincere about medicine, etc), will DO schools be more forgiving about my lack of ECs?

Thanks

I am going to agree with david here. OP: If you really want to go into vet school you should quite worrying if your race will give you a leg up and get off your a s s and actually get some real life experience. Oh and this is a great way to start off your PS:

And I also enjoy volunteering at the animal shelter, cause I love animals.

Go back to your pre-med forums.

I really didn't want to post a serious response in this thread, but race should not matter whatsoever when it comes to acceptance into professional school. We all had to take the SAME exact classes and work just as hard for a spot in veterinary school. The color of your skin or country of origin should NOT play a role in the passion you have for this career choice. That's really, really shallow in my opinion, and veterinary admission committees will see right through it if you try to boldly play that card.

Does anyone else find this post absolutely hilarious? I hope a few more trolls really fuel the fire

Lol I like all the people getting their panties up in a knot. Let me clarify just so no one gets a aneurysm:
I was asking out of curiosity. I love animals but have no desire to apply to vet school. Trust me, I do not plan to take 300k in student loans only to come out and make 50k, although I commend you if you do (those of you who will actually get into vet school, that is. There's a lot of dumb people on here).

Does anyone else find this post absolutely hilarious? I hope a few more trolls really fuel the fire

yea for some reason my blood isnt boiling as much in this thread as it was in the bodiatrist one, so im enjoying it. these trolls sure do make my day go by faster. soon it will be jan and i'll finally hear from a school!!

What if you don't? Vet schools are extremely competitive. Are you going to apply again or do you have a plan B?

There's a lot of dumb people on here

very mature. you're such a hypocrite.

so anywho, yes i have heard that asians will benefit more if affirmative action is taken away. however, we were not talking about affirmative action specifically before, just competition in general. lets look at some info.

http://www.aamc.org/data/facts/applicantmatriculant/table25-a-mcatgpagridasian.pdf
http://www.aamc.org/data/facts/applicantmatriculant/table25-w-mcatgpagridwhite.pdf

scroll down to total applicants and acceptances. 45% asian 48% white

Even though asians represent a smaller percentage of the total class, there are also less that apply. In the end, you have the same acceptance rate as caucasians.

What if you don't? Vet schools are extremely competitive. Are you going to apply again or do you have a plan B?

yes i will apply again. i have a plan B C D E F ....some will lead me into vet school and some will lead me into many other careers

I'm finding that I'm able to use this pic more and more frequently here recently.
