Ask a LOR one year early

I am a second year MD student. My research PI will leave for another school soon. I would like to ask him for a LOR, in fear that he will forget about me next year, when I apply for residency. Is this possible? Where can he send the letter? Can my school academic office store it until next year?

Get interfolio! You can have him send the letter there and then have interfolio send it to AMCAS whenever you want.
