Hi guys! I'm here with my roommate and we are current students at MWU AZ. We are happy to answer any questions that you have about our amazing program.
It's my pleasure to give back to the site that helped me so much! 🙂No questions right now- just chiming in to thank you, @fogorvostan , for your countless contributions to SDN!
Can you describe the community at MWU?
How has MWU helped students move beyond their student loans?
What aspects of MWU are worthwhile?
How is living in Arizona? What amenities are there nearby the campus? How is housing? Is there a costco nearby (I love costco)?
01: Can you describe the community at MWU? We are really here for each other. As a D1, I have been helped tremendously by the D2s. They met with us before classes started to give us tours, met with us to help us learn how to study for our exams, a few of them are holding a waxing technique workshop later this week, their class reps make practice exams for us, etc. As for the relationships between classmates, we also do everything we can to help out each other. We have a facebook group where we upload study guides that we have made, answer questions, organize study groups, create study material, etc. During sim clinic, I can literally walk up to anyone and feel comfortable asking for help. Unfortunately, with 140 of us, it is hard to learn everyone's name, but that's just the reality of a large class. Between us and other programs, I would say that the feeling of family continues. We have our basic science classes with the optometry students and regularly see the other programs (DO, pt, vet, etc.) around campus. Can you describe the community at MWU?

It's rough. It's really rough. I'm not going to lie, I actually cried today while walking home from the library because of how overwhelmed I am. D1 year is full of basic science exams (one a week) and dental exams (one a week + some weeks more than one) and practicals, and case study presentations, etc. According to my roommate, you eventually become better at studying and better at memorization, so it does become doable. She basically said you "become numb to the pain". D2 year is all dental since we take part 1 of the boards after D1 year and you spend 2 full days a week in sim, in addition to your dental courses + pharm courses. D3 is our easiest year here and then things ramp up again D4 year because of boards. How is the course rigor transition from undergraduate to D1?
Thanks!01: Can you describe the community at MWU? We are really here for each other. As a D1, I have been helped tremendously by the D2s. 02: How has MWU helped students move beyond their student loans? When you graduate from MWU AZ, you are ready to practice. You don't need to waste time getting AEGD. Starting with your D1 year, we are also taking classes on how to successfully run a practice.
03: What aspects of MWU are worthwhile? Our clinical program is top notch. One of the unique things is our D3 and D4 pairing. You will work in the clinic as a D3/D4 pair. You basically switch on and off where one person acts as the dentist and one as the assistant, which allows for even faster procedures. Faster procedures = more patients = more experience for you.
04: How is living in Arizona? What amenities are there nearby the campus? How is housing? Is there a costco nearby (I love costco)? Arizona is hot, haha. It's a dry heat though, so it isn't too bad. Once it hits October though, it's beautiful weather. As for amenities around campus, there is literally everything with in 5 miles. Housing is plentiful as well. We have on campus housing but that fills up kind of fast. Right across the street from campus are some apartment complexes that are a little higher in rent (totally doable with a roommate, which is what I'm doing with my roommate). If you are okay with a 15 minute or so drive, you can live a bit further out for cheaper rent. Some people commute from Scottsdale or around there, but I personally wouldn't recommend that.
Haha thank you. First BASI test was an A so I'm hoping that'll help me with Tuesday's exam. I just REALLY am bad at biochem. No question. Just want to say congratulation @fogorvostan and say you are doing great!
I'm sorry you felt overwhelmed but I'm sure you will be fine. You can do it. I BELIEVE IN YOU!
Say it ain't so...Basically, this week, I did an entire semester's worth of biochem in 3 days.
Definitely 😉Is MWU-AZ everything you dreamed it would be?
D1 is the hardest year in terms of "oh my god how the heck am i ever going to do all of this oh my god there is so much stuff to do how do people survive" and studying for the boards. But you have a lot more free time as a D1. You just have to learn how to study more efficiently so that you can have that free time. D2 is hard in a sense that you are in class more often and are in sim 2 days a week.Is the first year the hardest year?
01: I don't know about the interviews this year, but last year, it was just a series of questions that everybody that asked. The interview questions from last year are floating around on SDN if you dig enough for them. 7:50pm flight is more than enough time. I had a 4:00pm flight and was cutting in close. You'll have plenty of time to hang out in the airport 😉Thanks for doing this! Love Midwestern! My in-laws literally live a few miles from the school!
One, I have an interview at Midwestern in November. I heard a rumor that the interviews were scenario based but then I have read that their interviews were some of the best people attended. Can you speak to your experience? Also, I have a 7:50 pm flight out after my interview, is that cutting it close?
Two, do you rent or purchase your instruments?
Three, do you enjoy the systematic ciriculuum at MWU?
Four, what is your overall impression of the school as a D1? Is it what you thought it would be or better/worse?
Finally, and a weird question, is Dr. Polk still affiliated with the school at all?
Thank you!!
Its everyone at the same time!Hi! I have my interview scheduled soon and I was wondering if you could tell me more about the interview process and how to prepare for it. I understand that the interview is with two faculty members and a current student, but is it a panel interview with you and all three interviewers at once or would you have three separate one-on-on interviews with them. Thank you so much for your time!
I would take as many hard science courses as you can (while still maintaining good grades, of course). It's always easier to learn material if you have already heard it before. Upper level bio courses, physiology, anatomy, microbiology, biochem, etc. What undergrad classes would you suggest being exposed to before school starts? I know A&P for sure but anything else?
