asking a physician to shadow

I'm going to writing a letter to a DO to request to shadow. He practices very close the university that I will be transfering to. I am at home now, about a 3 hour drive so I think the best way to request is via mail.

Any thoughts about what to write?
Also, from anyones experience, did anyone ever meet a physician that just didn't care about lettng people shadow?

Writing a letter might be a good idea, I emailed a D.O. that was close to my university and she never got back to me! So I am going to have to find another D.O. around my school and start getting in touch with him/her.
