asking a physician to shadow

I'm going to writing a letter to a DO to request to shadow. He practices very close the university that I will be transfering to. I am at home now, about a 3 hour drive so I think the best way to request is via mail.

Any thoughts about what to write?
Also, from anyones experience, did anyone ever meet a physician that just didn't care about lettng people shadow?

Write something very brief and to the point. The DO's I've met are much more receptive to letting people shadow them than the MD's. However the n for my sample size equal about 5 so don't take me too seriously.
