I'm getting ready to ask for letters of recommendation but also need to ask for references since I'm looking for a job for next year (taking a gap year). Would it be too much to ask for both an LOR and a reference from the same person at the same time?

No, that's totally reasonable, especially since it means you only have to bug them once.

A professional reference often won't require a professor to submit a written recommendation, but to provide contact information in case the hiring manager wants to follow up and discuss your application for the position. It's not too much work on the part of the reference.

Also, if you are applying this current cycle, you should get moving on those letters of recommendation. I'd say etiquette dictates that you should give a professor at least a month's notice .. and it's already June.

Thanks! I won't be complete until the end of August since I'm taking the July 25 MCAT so I figured I would use August 1 as a deadline for LOR's and then that'll leave a little extra time just in case. So that's 8 weeks in advance, which is fine, right?

2 months is plenty. Professors usually procrastinate till the deadline before writing. Doesn't take them 2 months to write it, they already have templates to which they can modify it to fit you.
