How do you guys go about asking for LORs?

Do you stop by their office? Do you just ask after class?

It always feels somewhat awkward for me since there never seems to be any convenient time or way to ask. Basically, it seems to me that you are asking for a huge favor out of the blue, and there is no way to get around that.

Also, what happens if they are hesitant or make excuses? What do you say then?

Go see them during office hours-not just when you need the letter but during the course of a semester so you can get to know them and they know who they're writing about.

If they look hesitant it's probably best to say "thanks for you time" and don't ask for a letter, if they're hesitant then they might not write you the best letter.
