Hey,
I am a non-traditional post-bacc student like many of you. I have a question about asking for recommendations. I have asked for recommendations from my current professors but how do I go about asking my undergrad professors to rewrite old recommendations for me? I graduated from college almost three years ago, and at that time I asked them to write a work recommendation. How do I go about asking them to retool it so it could be used for medical school?

I have the same problem in that I haven't really kept in touch with a lot of the people who could have cleared my recommendations hurdle. First thing is you learn from this, stay in touch. It's not ass-kissing, it's maintaining bridges.

You already have recommendations from current professors, you can't be that far from fulfilling the average 2 or 3 (that's the average right?). You only need so many from professors, additional ones could be from people who know you professionally from work, or people who can vouch for your superhuman altruism 😀 .

As for your actual question, ask yourself if the prof(s) from back then could really write you a good personal letter. If yes, then coming out of the blue may not be as big a deal as it seems. Just contact them, be simple, respectful and ask. You may want to have a current cv so they may update their letters accordingly if they do end up helping you out.

A good way to think of this is: if they felt strongly enough about your ability to write a good lor, unless you've become a criminal, they've no reason to feel otherwise now. Maybe you can even sit down to lunch together, get reacquainted. Sorry for the long post. It's just that I've had and still am working around an identical problem.

thank you for the advice. I am going to take it 🙂.
