Asking for WL update

I have a school listed as PTE with a CTE deadline on May 15th. I also have a WL at a school that may be cheaper for me to attend. Would it be appropriate to ask for an update? I'll need to withdraw my WL spot next week if I don't hear back.

What was your communication history with the waitlisted school? Is cost the only reason for you to flip?

I was given a waitlist offer early April and accepted my spot. Other than that, I have not communicated beyond this. I have not submitted a letter of intent because I admit I'm not sure I would definitely take the spot if admitted (it's one of the newer med schools).
Cost is not the only thing. Both schools do not have their own hospital, but the WL school has rotations that are closer to the school and seems more guided than my other school.
