How will schools view it if I ask for my position on their waitlist? I know many schools won't give out this information, but I figure it can't hurt to ask. However, I don't want to jeopardize my chances if it is frowned upon. If it is alright to ask, what would be the most effective way to do so (i.e.- should I call the admissions office directly or send them an email)?

I know this sounds pretty neurotic, but having a better idea of where I stand would really help me solidify my plans for next year.

I didn't ask, but while discussing my application a school told me that I was "in good position" on the wait list. I'm sure they knew that's about the only thing I wanted to know haha

It doesn't hurt to ask asnd I'd suggest that a phone call is more likely to be productive. Even if a school's policy is to NOT give out the information, a friendly admissions staffer may give you a clue anyway. If you catch them at the right ttime.
