Hello,

I know we should start the interview off with open ended questions like, "tell me more about your cc". Is there a way to ask open ended questions for ROS? For eg, asking "Have you noticed any urinary changes?" will they answer all the burning, frequency, discharge, etc questions for me? Same goes for How has your sleep been?, How has your weight been?, etc. Thanks.

stick with things relative to the CC only. I know you want to be elaborate and include everything but you won't have time to do a proper ROS.

Do all the gimme's from FA (intro, shake hands, wear gloves/wash hands, etc)

Open ended "I see you're here for [CC], why don't you tell me more about that?"

then recognize the system(s) of problems and ask questions pertinent to that system and specifically to gather a proficient HPI. The key to the CS is timing and a FOCUSED hx, not a comprehensive one. Yes you still have to ask FmHx, PmHx, PSHx, drugs, allergies etc but you don't have time for a proper ROS.

Do a ROS question if you think their answers will be relevant to their HPI.

For example - Pt with SOB. Make sure to ask about CP, cough, etc.
Pt with dysuria - Ask about Back Pain and do CVA tenderness r/o pyelo. Ask about suprapubic tenderness, frequency, urgency.

I don't think a full ROS is warranted on anyone for CS.
