I will be graduating from residency this year and it is looking like we will be held in place prior to pcs until August. Will I be able to sign for the July bonus while still at my residency location?? I wasn't sure if this was something that came from the specific mtf's money and they wouldn't want to pay it if they are not my gaining command. Appreciate any help you guys can provide!

Yes. Sign at your current station. When i graduated, I PCSed in July, but I signed for my bonus in like May. I was told that was the right thing to do so that they didn't frag it up.

Yet another thing I love about the military. They know what I do. They know how long my ADSO is. They know how much my incentive pay is. Yet I have to physically sign for it, or I don't get it. You know, in case I might not want it this time. Thanks for being reasonable, Medcom.

Thanks for the info! I will plan to sign for it in the spring. Agree on the gripe about signing for it. They probably hope some poor fools don't realize this and they won't have to pay it.

To clarify, are you PCSing later because you're graduating late? You can sign for it ahead of time, but I don't think they're actually going to give you the money until you're no longer in training.

It's just a way to make sure that you don't go anywhere for a year, a way to keep you in service for 3 more months beyond your ADSO completion (ISP) (a.k.a. WAGE THEFT in the real world if you actually want to get out when your contract is up), and a way to yank the "bonus" (a.k.a. YOUR SALARY in the real world) when the proposed budget cuts go through (I bet I'll see this in the next 611 days I have left)

No graduating on time but a delayed pcs so hopefully should still be good to go.

Also wondering how board exam reimbursement works. Has anyone had any issues getting this paid? Specifically speaking for the Army. I know our gaining command is expected to pay it but not until we pass and only if funds are available is my understanding. Any insight? I just shelled out the 2500 for mine.

When you get to your new duty station, make sure you get with your clinic or department chief to find out about the exact mechanism to request reimbursement; usually the department secretary knows the messy details and who in RMD to forward the paperwork to. Also, request reimbursement at the beginning, not the end, of the fiscal year to maximize the chances of funds being available.

Don't sign the ASP the year of your ADSO lest you remain for 3 more months. Definitely don't sign the VSP contract your last year.
Wait, stop, just stop. You're confused.

ASP goes July 1 - June 30 (for those who graduate on cycle and do their paperwork on time). There's no reason to not get it the last year of your ADSO.

VSP is monthly. You don't sign up for it. It's automatic based on time since graduation from medical school.

ISP is a 1-year contract that is usually aligned with the fiscal year (Oct 1 - Sep 30 the following year). The message authorizing it is often late, so it is common for payment to be delayed until Nov or even Dec ... but in those cases the letters and obligation are backdated to Oct 1. Those who have ADSOs that end on June 30 will sometimes choose not to accept ISP their final year in order to avoid having their ADSOs extended to Sep 30.

MSP/ISP (2- or 3- or 4-year contracts) may be paid late the first year, based on when the authorization is released, but subsequent years should be paid Oct 1st because an existing contract is in effect (ie, they don't have to wait for the authorization message and do new paperwork after the first year).
