I posted here before and got a great spread of responses. Currently I am interested in youth development and clinical psychology or counseling. The more I think about it I wonder if my motives are sufficient.
I am interested in helping youth modify and change beliefs. I get excited when I look at the human nonreductionistically.
But I also have reservations. First are a few potential shortfalls. I love helping people but find myself worn out by the difficultness of certain clients. I've worked with students and endure them sometimes yelling and giving attitude. I like to endure this if I can help them get to a point of change.
So my interest in the work is based on the interest in these issues with the hope teatment makes a siffence.
The more I think about it the more I wonder whether I'd be able to effect change the way I want as a phd.
First I find it easier to come up with developed research in more concrete scientific areAs. I find that while I'm interested in social science I am fed up with the fact thAt what I'd be interested in doing does not necessarily add up to concrete change. That is I worry I don't have he ability to conceptualiZe the problem and intervention.
Is there a field of clinical/ applied research or consulting that would allow me to pursue research or program development in case I didn't want to continue doing therapy?
