A 23-year-old woman has prolonged episodes of wheezing, dyspnea, and anxiety that are relieved by β-adrenergic agonists. The major mediator of her condition is:
a. bradykinin
b. eosinophil chemotactic factors
c. leukotrienes
d. prostaglandin E
e. thromboxane

any ideas? thanks!

F. Do your own homework.

Or at least try wikipedia first.

thanks for the help.
i actually did try to look it up and found that histamine was the main mediator, which isn't one of the choices.
if someone actually wants to help rather than posting some wise-ass remark, i'd appreciate it. thanks.

From my own experience, I would say C) leukotrienes. I have asthma, and I took Cingulair (aka Montelukast, a leukotriene receptor blocker).

Ok, maybe a little guidance would help. Ok, so go down the list, starting with β-adrenergic agonists and then a-e. Briefly summarize: What does each one do (mechanism of action)? What are some of the important interactions associated with a-e? What are typical physiological symptoms of a-e? Do that, and we'll take a look at the next step.

The correct answer should be C.

If "histamine" were an answer choice, this question would be quite evil, since histamine can trigger type I allergies and cause similar episodes; but yes the underlying problem is asthma and its mediated through leukotrienes.

Closing thread as OP has answer to question. Asking for an explaination of asthma and chemical mediators would be fine but printing specific questions from tests/homework etc are not permitted.
