Hi,

This is my first post ever so sorry if this is in the wrong section.
My university offers an astronomy class online and it seems to be pretty easy from the student reviews. I know that taking pre med courses are looked down upon online etc and although astronomy is not a pre med course, it is still a science class and is counted in the science GPA. I was thinking about taking this class as a science GPA booster so will med schools look down on this online science class even though it's not a pre-med class?

I doubt they'd look down on it. Some people, like myself, take classes like astronomy because we are genuinely interested, so it wouldn't be quite fair if it was looked down on. But it probably won't help you much. Take some upper level biology courses instead and do well.

Edit: I assumed you were talking about intro astronomy. If this is an upper level astronomy course, those tend to be super difficult.

astronomy is fine, but i wouldn't treat it as an easy A course even if it has favorable reviews. intro level astronomy courses focus on basic concepts and language, so that's mostly straightforward. upper level astronomy courses become a lot like physics as special relativity and general relativity become involved and heavily used. med schools definitely won't look down on astronomy courses.

but astronomy is a fun class and you'll enjoy it if you're interested. you may get to see cool stuff like this:

Think again as treating this class as a booster. I naively thought the same thing during undergrad and got a C in the dang course! So, that counted towards my science GPA some odd years later (I'm a non-trad). Astronomy lies in the overall field of physics, after all, a subject that the common pre-med or person would not consider "easy". I say, beware and study your booty off if you do decide to take it. It's tough but it's very interesting!

Yep it is an intro astronomy class and the student reviews say it was pretty easy. I thought about taking it because I am pretty interested in the subject matter.

But what about the fact that its an online course? Will med schools treat it differently because its a science course but taken online?

I took astronomy because I was interested in it and because it was an intro class for non science majors. Turned out to be a very interesting, surprisingly difficult class. And I paired it with orgo and physics. Be careful!

yeah i took multiple astro classes cause its sick af and when ever again are you able to have the opportunity to learn about space from world class professors ever again?? my result -> multiple interviews with an MD acceptance
