ASU or U of A ?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hmmm... ASU or U of A?
I guess I'd have to go with Harvard.

But honestly (if its a real question), the one that you will be happiest at. I say this cuz that will make you do more and thus look better to the medschools. So, do you wanna be in Tuscon or Tempe? Tempe is a fun place and has alot going for it... I don't know much about Tuscon (sp?) Only visited there a few times.

edit: Oh, if you do go to ASU and still need to take O-chem, I suggest you take the "for majors" version instead of the pre-med version. Lot less people, more one-on-one time, and easier grading. 😎

Wait wait, what makes you assume he is talking about arizona? For all you know he could be referring to Arkasas State University or the University of Arkansas. Man, if it weren't for Billy 'Boy' Clinton, yall would probably think Arkansas was in Africa or something.

Oh wait, it is AZ joe. My bad.

go where you will be happiest. (i agree w/ mr. reddly.)

Hey! I'm not that stupid! I know Arkansas isn't in Africa. It's in Russia. Duh!

But ya, he does need to give more info me thinks. 😀

Go to the UofA. Professors at the UofA are top notch; many well known in their fields for cutting edge research. Pre-health advising program is great, many volunteer coordinators interact with the pre-health office to link interested pre-meds; established programs (if I remember correctly, ASU didn't even have an MCB major until a few years ago - correct me if I'm wrong); If you are at all interested in doing research - copious amounts of opportunities exist, both paid and for credit, not only on the main campus, within the departments of biochemistry and biophsyics, microbiology/immunology, chemistry, and molecular and cellular biology, but also at the medical school in departments of pediatrics, gastroenterology, internal medicine, and cardiology.

In general, you won't want for anything at the UofA. Tucson is much more tolerable that Phoenix in the summer, many outdoor activities are within a 20 minute drive of campus, lots of culture (Broadway shows, symphony, theatre), and further, the ASU basketball team blows!

Tucson is big enough that you can find stuff to do, but not so big that you have to get on the interstate to get from one place to another.

If you want the party scene, buildings that are completely concrete and splashed with the god awful maroon/mustard school colors, classes full of California school rejects, and a bigger city, go to ASU.

Go to U of A unless you have some sort of amazing scholarship to ASU. Yes, I'm biased because I went to U of A for my second bachelors. But I have relatives who went to both ASU and U of A and said the level of education at U of A was a lot better. U of A has a good reputation as a reseaarch university and the med center is really good. You'll have lots of great opportunities for volunteering there, or at any of the number of hospitals and hospices around Tucson. I thought U of A's premed advising was pretty good and I never had much trouble getting an appointment in a timely manner. My science classes were decent overall. You'll get some good professors and bad professors at any school. The research opportunities were great and I found it was pretty easy to find something as long a you took initiative and showed interest. U of A has a great summer program called UBRP for doing biology research in the summers and you can often stay on in your lab as a paid postion the following year. Overall, the opportunities are great and if you take initiative you'll have a great experience there. And if you do want to party that aspect of it is there or you can ignore it. Overall, U of A has a better reputation (ever hear the joke "I didn't go to ASU because I already knew how to read?") and I think that will help you more if you are applying to schools outside of Arizona. Good luck!

Why do ASU grads put their diploma on their dashboard?

-To park in the handicap spots.

What do you do when an ASU grad shows up at your door?

-Pay for the Pizza

LOL. Here are some others I've heard 🙂

What does the average ASU student get on his SAT's?
Drool.

What's the difference between a litter of puppies and ASU fans?
Eventually puppies grow up and stop whining.

I don't know, with AZ Biodesign and all the research money the new president is pumping into the school, asu has the potential to be a strong research institution in a few short years. they have connections through azbio with Transgenomic and now have a new partnership with Mayo Grad school allowing mayo students to do research at asu and vice versa. From where I stand, asu research has a bright future.
yes the basketball sucks but footballs alright
and there's definitely some honeys

I guess I am going to Tuscon this weekend to take a peek...

Thanks

What is your major AZ? If it is in any kind of engineering I think that ASU will be a great fit for you. I have to agree though that U of A has a great Bio area. On the other side, if you stay in Phoenix you will be close to NIH Research Facility for Diabetes. Don't mock us Cali's either 🙂 I lived in Phx. for 15 years before coming to Cali. Remember, you don't have to major in bio to be a doctor, so think about what is best for your major,,,that is key.

Here's something else to think about.... More of a question to the others...

A student goes to Hopkins and gets a 3.0
The same student goes to ASU and gets a 3.8

Which student is more likely to get into medical school?

This question is not entirely hypothetical. I know alot of students who wished they had gone somewhere other than Hopkins where they could have studied less for better grades. As I look back (with MD from any US school as the goal), I almost wish I had just graduated from ASU with a kickass GPA... even though the core engineering classes were not very difficult IMHO.

As for Cali peeps at ASU... 😉 My sis graduated from there - BS/MS in BioEngineering ... But then again, she also went to UofA - MD (thank you easy residency reqs)

ASU... im gonna finish up with my aerospace engineering degree and head on back home to MCW... then ill be the most powerful rocket scientist/MD the world has ever seen

ASU or U of A-if you're premed, none are that great at the biological sciences. Look at the rankings in biological science in US News. The compeitition at the schools are just not up to snuff in producing highy qualified applicants. The fact that U of A SOM wants more people to re-apply says they can't even produce their own good students. Their talent pool is low.

The price is right though, but you get what you pay for. You will be less competitive at applying to schools outside of AZ.

Coming from a CA school and taking classes at ASU-I saw 100+ student classes being taught at ASU to 20 or less. It was much easier. However, ASU is much more diverse, and the community is metropolitan. Tucson is desert, desert, and more desert.

Look at Phoenix Magazine, the top doctors in each specialty field didn't even graduate from U of A's SOM.

My 2-cents

I agree 100% with KBSO's post. To answer the OP's question I would say UofA looks a little better than ASU when applying to schools (it doesn't have the party school stigma) and it may or may not come with more opportunities. Honestly, I'm not so sure either school would really give you any significant advantage over the other when applying to medical schools (no one will be impressed one way or the other). However, the insinuations that ASU students are stupid in the previous posts (even though the jokes were funny), that's just silly. Take a look at the avg. SAT scores of both schools. They are close enough that if ASU students were drooling on their tests then UofA students may have drooled just a tiny bit less. 🙂

You can make fun of ASU all you want but you will find some of the hottest women there... and lotsa fun can be had on Miller Ave....

If U of A has a linkage into their med school I would encourage that option.

So true! And they walk around in groups of 100 or more... all in sundresses.. 😱 Ahhh... pledge week. 😎

ahhh pledge week is right... oh how i love ASU

Well, from just looking at the medical school class, there are a lot more people from UofA than from ASU. However, I think a lot more people who are premed attend UofA vs. ASU, so that may not be the best indication.
Overall, I think you will find more serious students at UofA and a more serious academic environment.
It is also true that if your ultimate goal is UofA COM, applying from an outofstate undergraduate (or outofcountry in my case) seems to be an advantage.
All I can say is where ever you attend, work really hard. You will need to do well to compete in state and look for things that will set you apart from your classmates. I think the greatest disadvantage for applying to medical school (assuming you are applying for UA COM) is that they want a diverse class, so your main competition is all the premeds at which ever school you attend. You need to be the best out of that pile if there are 100 of you applying from the same school. However, in my case, I was the only person applying from my university, so I just needed to be better than the worst person they were considering admitting from the schools they had tons of applicants from...I don't know if that logic makes much sense...but it seems to me that this was kinda the way it went. People from UofA/ASU seem to have had much higher GPA's than my classmates from outofstate universities. (However, most outofstaters I spoke with had higher MCAT's so who knows...all these sort of discussions are just playing the numbers game in a way that doesn't usually work at an individual level...so I guess in conclusion, go to the school where you feel you can do better and set yourself apart...that is the most important thing)
