At what point is a DEA # given ?

Can any one tell me how soon The DEA # is given? I would like to know becouse I have been told that it is the mark of being able to moonlight.

In most states you get your DEA # after your permanent liscense has been issued. You can get these after your first year of residency and after passing Step 3 of the boards (again, after 1st year of residency in most states: Illinois requires two years of residency before permanent liscensure).

Start the process early because it'll take several months for everything to come back from state liscensing boards and additional time to apply and get staff priviledeges at hospitals to moonlight.
 
While you are an intern you will be given a DEA number to use which is the Hospital's DEA number plus your intern number. You can use this number to prescribe Class drugs during your internship year (or prior to your perm. lic.). But this number can only be used for resideny purposes. i.e. you cant write your grandmother a RX for Tylenol 3.
