Attending a conference, worth it? American College of Surgeons

So i saw some information for the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Clinical Congress which is in San Francisco this year. Has anyone ever been to one of these conferences? What are the benefits or incentives for a medical student to drop a bit of money to attend such an event during MSII?

I don't have a poster to present but was thinking of it maybe being a way to learn more about a field I'm interested in, the type of people working in it and what they are doing...

Probably not worth it if you neither know anyone in your department nor have anything to present.
 
The ACS Clinical Congress has a dedicated track for medical students, with tips on how to get involved in surgery in medical school, tips for applying, and I believe they usually do like some mock interviews?

They also usually line up some really good speakers (John Cameron gave a speech on the life of Halsted and the history of surgery when I was a fourth year).

They also have a reception with Program Directors, and a reception with current residents.

I would recommend reaching out to someone in the surgery department or the deans office to see if there is any funding available to defray the costs. Or find a group of interested students and shack up to save $$.

As noted above, the American College of Surgeons does a nice job presenting information to medical students during its Clinical Congress.

For second-year medical students who have not done their core general surgery rotation, the rest of the presentations may be over your head. But I don't think it's necessary only to attend if youre presenting something that's a good way to get some exposure to the field as well as hobnob with some bigwigs (John Cameron is about as big as you can get).

Speaking from personal experience? 😛
 
I recently went to acog (obgyn) conference and it was great. They had a specific medical student track with several great sessions and they had a residency program fair as well. Even if they didn't have the specific medical student track there were other sessions that sounded interesting that I would've attended. I also took a look at a lot of the posters.

It's always a good idea to start networking when given the opportunity.
