i am confused about the attendings who post on sdn; how do you have time to post here and more importantly why would you bother in the first place, i would assume after a long day you would rather spend time with family or sleep

Some people actually enjoy interacting with people who are working their way upwards in medicine. Besides, I can browse SDN live while watching a football game and playing Angry Birds. Now that browsers have this tab function thingie, I can even browse SDN while reading the medical literature.

Also, you might not realize this, but many children, especially those who are adolescents, do not want or need to spend a lot of time with their parents in the evening. I find this shocking, but it appears to be common.😡

Sleeping is a great way to spend time, but even if, as many attendings do, you work 60-70 hours/week, it's hard to sleep all of the other 100 hours or so.

LOL. Well said.

Ok yeah SDN requires 5 hours a day of solid, focused typing.

There is no such thing as too little time to laugh.

...because we remember what it is like before we were attendings.

It's a long road and sometimes a few helpful signs make the way a bit easier. 🙂

My dad posts on a two different BMW blogs, as well as Audiworld and mbworld. He does this while at the hospital or on his phone during rounds in front of patients 🤣

Some people find this type of stuff relaxing...

Wouldn't hurt for some of the residents on here to remember that as well, some of them get nasty towards med students and pre-med students.

I only work about 50 hours/wk. That leaves plenty of time for family, the gym, movies, dinner out, hobbies, sleep, etc. Anesthesia has frequent short down time between cases, etc. It's perfect for the Internet. Smart phones, iPads, electronic records, etc. mean the Internet is only seconds away whenever you want to surf or research something. I think it's changed teaching, I can have a library of articles, images, etc. immediately available for on the fly teaching 24/7.
I also don't read most of the threads and only browse 2 forums regularly.👍
I don't have time to get very involved in the medical school, (well I do, but I don't want the hassle) so this is how I give back to the future physicians who don't go into anesthesia.
Cheers!

this is the highest attending to pre-med ratio thread ever on this sub-forum.

it is like you guys just appeared out of no where.. and will likely disappear the same way.. like a fart in the wind..

most of the pre-med questions here get pretty repetitive, so those of us further along don't usually keep answering the same shtick. Plus, it's been 6 years since I filled out the AMCAS, and a lot longer than that since they did. Not like we have any keen insight into its changes.

SDN was a great resource for me applying to med school as a nontrad applicant. I still watch the EM forums and will post in pre-allo in appropriate threads.

I have more free time in my life now as an attending than I ever did as a med student or resident.

I check several times a day when I have down time, which, in a military medical inspection room, happens more often than in civilian hospitals. I practically stopped visiting this site after my MS-3, because it was becoming repetitive but, a few weeks ago, I was on vacation and decided to take a peek. To my surprise, my account was still working and I fell off the wagon.

I work full time in Emergency Medicine and do approx 144 hours per month (less than 40 per week)...and some people on here have said I work to much...

I mainly 'live' in the EM forums... I like the interactions on here; I have learned some things, and made some friends. I am not in academics and a small part of me misses that interaction with residents and such that I rarely get in 'private practice' (although I am at an academic place, just no EM... its still different from when I was a chief and interacting with my attendings and my lower levels). Also, medicine is a small world... Premeds applying in say just Texas have a good chance of running into someone on here at an interview or at their medical school... Us attendings and residents may cross paths at a national conference, etc.

BTW... I am holding my son and my wife is at her desk in our office next to me looking over her email. Dont know if its good or bad, but many people have 'family time' with computers in front of them. We RARELY watch TV...

Naw, man. That's what I like about these premeds; I get older, they stay the same age.

alright alright alright

It's funny - one of the partners of the group took me aside and said 'tkim - i see you've been working 35+ hours/week for the past year - we're worried you're working too much.'

I told him that once I make partner and get that sweet sweet partner bonus money I promise I would cut back to 30/week. Not.

I say we can give the residents a pass on always being on their A-game on their time away from work.

Nothing really about being on their A-Game, more about basic common courtesy and respect. You don't have to be on your A-Game to do this. I understand everyone has a bad day, but some on here seem to have that bad day constantly.
