So since I love New Orleans food and music, and the SAEM meeting is taking place there in May, I was wondering how much I would get out of attending it as a med student before my residency starts in July? I'm trying to figure out if it's worth the $600-700 it would cost me to attend since I'm not in a position to be sponsored and money is tight at the moment.

How much would you get out of this as a soon to be M3?

Well, actually that's kinda the big question for me. I mean I'll be a PGY1 in a couple months, so whatever I get out of it I would start putting to use soon. But at the same time, I don't know if I have enough familiarity with all the issues surrounding EM to appreciate that stuff yet.

It is great to go as an M3 at least for the medical student symposium and residency fair. I went last year in DC and recieved alot of solid advise on electives and the match process. AS a soon to be PGY1 im not going, I need to stretch the buck until we begin as it is. I figure I'll be able to possibly get sponsored to go next year.

I would love to go, but it's a lot of $$$. I don't think I'll learn much relevant to day-to-day life as an intern, so I don't think I'm missing out on much. The theme this year is very interesting to me, so I'm disappointed to be missing it from that perspective.

Hey man! Glad to find that you're doing EM. We're colleagues! 😀

Just wanted to say "hi!" Still doing the gourmand thing??

Hey Evo, that's awesome🙂 where are you at for residency? And yeah, I'm still a huge foodie.

Only because I will be there and I will take you out for a drink. 🙂 We could catch up

Ah, a drink with the redheaded goddess herself 🙂 That may be incentive enough, lol.

If you have the means to go, I think you should. This would be a good EM exposure for you. Plus, their will a be a residency fair on saturday, which will be very beneficial for upcoming M3 and soon to be M4.

and if you get bored, just go and gamble...hehehe

lol, not sure where ppl are getting the idea that I'm an M3 🙂 But yeah, so I looked at my cashflow, and I don't think i have the $800 to spare and my school won't pay for it since it's not a student organization and i'm not presenting. This is why I cannot wait to get paid in July lol. Ah well, I guess I'll take that drink next year Roja.

This conference is during my graduation. We have pre-commencement on Friday, graduation on Saturday...right up the street from SAEM.

I don't think people are mistaking you as an M3. Some of the post are responses to the second post by Alphaholic06, who is a soon-to-be-M3.

Anyways, you're right that this event is very costly especially for the out of towners. Flight+hotel+registration can run up to 1,000 bucks. I can't believe it costs 100.00 for students for the one day residency fair event. Something like this should be cheaper, if not, free for students to attend. After all, don't you want students to show up to the residency fair?

Unless you are really planning to attend sessions and try to learn stuff it's probably not worth it. Hell most residents don't go to try to learn, they go for the night life.

For M1/2/3s it would probably be a good networking opportunity and a chance to get some good advice.

Thanks. I'll probably go. I have a couple of friends that stay in New Orleans so I don't have to worry about accommodations.

That's great, I think it's a good choice especially you got housing taken care of. I just checkrf for pricing, and apparently all the rooms at the hotel has been booked!!! So, it's gonna cost something in the 200 per night at the near by hotels.
