I am thinking about attending general chemistry lectures, without enrollment or auditing. This is to help me prepare for the MCAT.

I have taken it in the past, performed well, but thanks to cramming I forgot a lot, so I would download all the previous time's notes, ppts, etc. and study from that as well, and take practice exams as my "exam".

Do you believe this is a bad idea? Why?

Lectures are full of almost 200 students, and they don't check, but I would be missing on exam days. Plus I'm kind of TAing first-year biology, so my students might notice.

It sounds like a good idea if it helps you, and a bad idea if your school or the professor has a problem with it. 🙂

If I were you, I'd check with the professor to make sure he or she is okay with it (no reason they wouldn't be in a 200 person lecture), and then I'd go for it. Personally, though, I think it sounds like a waste of time, as opposed to a bad idea. If you performed well in the past, you SHOULD be able to review more efficiently by using the resources the rest of us use (TPR, TBR, Kaplan, etc.) than by sitting through gen chem lectures.

I think I could try to review/learn using TPR/Kaplan and Khan Academy to see if I need to relearn the subject then. Thank you for your advice. Even if I did well I only remember the topics necessary for organic chemistry success.

If you're like most of us, working through MCAT review material will be sufficient. If not, you might find an MCAT review course helpful. Sitting through an entire semester's worth of lectures just seems like a lot. Is chem the only subject you're worried about? If not, and if you're really nervous, you might want to think about a review course, which will not only go over what you need to know, but the teaching will be entirely focused on the test.

I agree this is important. You wouldn't want to get an Institutional Action for theft of educational services, or some such, like one of our SDNers did a few years ago.

Thank you for that note. I guess I can try to relearn the subject on my own before I try to attend lectures/ask if I can without enrollment. I'm just overly anxious about the MCAT and believe general chemistry and CARs will end me if I don't start soon.
