My interview season is starting and I am at a loss on what to wear. I've tried on pant suits, but they do not suit my body well. I like dress and skirt suits, but to wear all black makes me look like im going to a funeral. Would a maroon dress with black trimming and a black suit jacket be appropriate? Or would that stand out too much?

Well, if you want to stand out, that will do it.
Suits come in colors other than black. There are many shades of gray and deep blue. I'd even like to see deep olive green if the applicant has the right coloring (attention, Gingers!) A woman can also pull off a dark burgundy which is a color you won't find in men's suits.

However, we've come to expect skirt or slacks, suit jacket, and blouse (buttons up the front) or shell (no buttons in the front). Wearing a dress with a jacket would be unconventional. Some interviewers might find an unconventional applicant to be interesting and maybe even desirable as a student but others may think that being unwilling to conform to convention in this small thing is a sign that as a student you will be constantly bucking the system and not in a good way.

I think a lot of people (myself included) think that pant suits do not suit their body well. I thought that at first, but when I started wearing suits more often I became more comfortable with the way I look in them!
