This is from the Associate Dean at my school...

We have heard from several of you by email, phone and in person that the tips about interviewing were helpful. I understand there are questions about appropriate dress floating around out there, and been assured that if I give you some suggestions, you won't think I'm acting like your mother!
For Gentlemen: dark suit (grey, black), solid or striped shirt (dark or tastefully bright colors are OK), subtle tie, and NO JEWELRY (sorry, there is absolutely no reason to make a bad impression on anyone for any reason at this point in your career). Look at what the residents are wearing when you are there and that will tell you if it is a place you can be comfortable when you revert to your "natural" state.
For Women: dark suit (grey, black, navy), tasteful blouse: NOTE, this CAN be bright color like red or blue. No plunging necklines and no skirts shorter than one to two inches above the knee. Jewelry is fine as long as it is tasteful. A bright scarf or label pin adds interest without attracting unnecessary or negative attention. Make up is fine, keep it light and appropriate for day.
You all already know this, but in the current state of heightened anxiety, sometimes being reminded helps.
Happy shopping,
Dr. L

I am def not mr armani or mr versace.. that being said a white tie.. might be a little tough to pull off. The basic colors for ties are blue and red. IMO if you pick any other color you need to have a good bit of fashion sense or you might look like a clown. That being said I have seen people rocking in all sorts of colors. Just depends if you can make it work.

Is this what you had in mind?

That's frickin' awesome! Yeah, unless you're trying to give the residents a funny story to tell I think I'd avoid the white tie. But in all seriousness, wear a power tie --red, blue, or yellow.

Hi there,
What did you wear for your medical school interview? You can actually wear the same outfit if it still fits. You should be well-groomed and well-dressed. If you picked up your suit from Mens Warehouse, just make sure that it fits properly and is flattering. Dark grey and navy blue are fine. Clean shirt and tasteful tie. No strong cologne or aftershave. If you are a 5 o'clock shadow person, shave just before you leave for the interview. Beards and moustaches should be well trimmed. Leave the earring out for this one.

For females: Wear comfortable shoes. There is usually a tour and your feet will really hurt and ruin your interview. Carry extra pantyhose and make sure that you do not have runners. No nail art, dangly earrings, strong perfumes or oils or extreme hairstyles. No heavy make-up as you might give the impression that your make-up is more important than your job.

If your interview involves a casual dinner the night before, do beware that you are under observation. Do not drink too much or act in anyway that is unprofessional. Enjoy a beer or glass of wine but this is not the time to chug anything and vomit for the rest of the night. Wear a sports shirt with cords or khaki pants. Do not wear jeans and a T-shirt. Often it is at these casual gatherings that the residents decide if you would fit in with the rest of the group.

Carry your interview suit on the plane with you. You don't want to show up in jeans and T-shirt because the airline lost your luggage.

Go back outside the interview day to the programs that interest you most. Ask questions and see how the place functions outside the interview. We always put on a show for the visiting interviewees but you can get the real-story outside the interview day. Ask where people live and the environment for family. If your spouse is unhappy, you will be unhappy. Take your spouse with you on your go-back day.

Have fun on the "rubber chicken" circuit.

Is it bad to wear a nice blazer with matching pants, or is a suit absolutely necessary?

I think suits look better. Yeah, they're expensive, but everyone else has to buy one too.

I had my first interview. Wore a nice suit.. a lighter blue shirt and an Orange-ish with stripes kenneth Cole Tie. 100% pimp! If you really have no sense of fashion go to a Macy's Bloomingdales etc and see what the mannequins are wearing and buy that. alternatively, bring your suit to mean wearhouse and ask them to hook you up with a shirt and tie that works. sometimes they try to make you look like an idiot so if you really have no taste bring a woman with you. Most of the stuff at MW is overpriced but they will do the work for you!
