calling all 3rd years

ok.. well similar to the calling all 2nd years thread.. i have a question

i'm just entering my 2nd year.. and from what i hear.. its going to be hell year (all our medchem and pharmacology year)... its medchem and pharmacology allll year (we dont start therapuetics until 3rd year)....

i know that all schools are a little different... but i'm wondering how you all survived??

i'm hearing horror stories from upperclassmen.. that 2nd year is the worst ever... and the slogan is "Pharm D equals C" or "2.0 is the way to go!", implying that you will be lucky if you pass these classes..

any advice?? besides copious amounts of caffeine that is?? (my old ticker cant take too much caffeine)

I can't talk about other programs, but I can tell you my story. Second year at USC for my curriculum (they are changing it for the upcoming students)was a nightmare. It wasn't because the classes were so much more difficult than the first year, it was just that there were so many exams and material to master. It was constant exam after exam and quizzes after quizzes. It was never ending. Between work, exams, quizzes, labs, health fair, projects, and pharmacy social events, you won't have that much free time. Best advice, form study groups to divide up the work and study ahead. Don't wait until the last minute to study. Use the little free time you will during second year to catch up on sleep instead of partying.

thanx for the advice.. i've heard 2 sides, that its really hard, and then the other side that its just a LOT of material

im going to do my best to "stay on top" of things this year

2nd year at UF is med chem, pharmacology, kinetics and therapeutics plus a couple of easy but time consuming courses. I looked at the roster of the 3rd year students. There are only 28 students left and they started with 50.

I am planning on not having much of a life. I'm only going to work 2 hours a week, just to keep my seniority at CVS.

Hi!
dgroulx,

You mean that UF started their Class of 2002 with 50 students in their PharmD program and now in PharmD 3rd year there are only 28 students left. So, that means 22 students dropped out from PharmD program after 2 years? Now, what they're going to do?, choose different major not Pharmacy? UF only accept 50 students per year for PharmD?

UF accepts about 50 at the distance sites and 130 in Gainesville. During class yesterday, they told us that the attrition rate was the same for all sites. They told us not to worry, because there was a correlation between math/science GPA and PCAT scores. Those on the lower end were the ones who didn't make it and our class had higher stats. This year's incoming class has even higher stats.

Fifteen of the students who didn't make it are now in my 2PD class and they have to repeat any classes where they earned a D or F. One more D and they are out of the program. Not all students were approved to repeat the year and they are gone for good. I'm not sure what they will decide to do, but they won't be pharmacists.

That's a lot of money UF is going to loose, not getting tuition from allmost half their expected class. Didn't you post before that their attrition rate was 5% for 1st year adn 25% for 2nd year dgroulx ( which is still extremely high)?
I'm glad i'm not going to UF.

I' sure most schools don't have a higher than 10% attrition rate from start to finnish, if even that high.

I expect most of the repeating students to make it through school. Several students have to repeat pharmacology and therapeutics, but passed med chem and kinetics. Now, they only have to focus on those 2 subjects during the semester and it should also be easier the second time around.

Technically, they won't count against the overall attrition rate unless they fail again. The students just end up taking an extra year to get through school. They are also paying tuition for the same courses again, so UF makes out okay.

our curriculum sounds just like yours... i start therapeutics this year and they are already being weird...
anyway...

we went from the largest class that has entered the SOP and now we are officially the smallest.
We lost 11 the first semester with pcol and a few with our ID2 class (they just didn't try.. the id people)
we were also going through a few transistions with new professors and then old ones that are ****ty yet the keep around anyway...

it definitely was a hell of a year but you get through it. i'm not a big studier so i made it still studying a few nights before exams.
The second semester for me was much better for some reason (could have to do with the above mentioned adjustment)

so think of it this way... stupider people than you have gone before you and made it so obviously you can too.

i know all classes have those that you look at and think... how do they pass...

it may be a long year but it will be over shortly.
