October 17-23, 2004

http://www.amsa.org/programs/npcw/npcw.cfm

1. What is National Primary Care Week?
2. How do I sign up?
3. Dates don't work for you?
4. Show me the money!
5. Spread the word!

1. National Primary Care Week (NPCW) is an annual event to highlight the importance of primary care and to bring health care professionals together to discuss and learn about generalist and interdisciplinary health care, especially its impact on and importance to underserved populations. This year?s theme is ?Caring for the Underserved: Careers in Community Health?. AMSA and NPCW student leaders at schools from a variety of health disciplines will be working in conjunction with local Area Health Education Centers (AHECs), health organizations and professionals to observe National Primary Care Week.

2. Signing up to be a local NPCW coordinator is easy! Just go to http://www.amsa.org/programs/npcw/signup.cfm and fill the required information. And don't worry, coordinating NPCW is not difficult. AMSA has put together tools and resources to help you put together a rock solid NPCW! Click on http://www.amsa.org/programs/npcw/npcw_res.cfm to get started.

As a local coordinator, you?ll have the opportunity to:

- Meet leaders in primary care and invite them to speak during NPCW;
- Work with health professional students and your local Area Health Education Center to plan the week's events;
- Involve your local elected officials and the media in your NPCW activities; and
- Organize a week's worth of events to further your classmates' understanding of primary care.

3. Worried that NPCW dates won?t work for your school? Pick your own dates! For instance, some schools plan activities on November, others even in January. Contact AMSA for any assistance you may need to jump start your own NPCW.

4. Funding is now available! Get the money you need for your activities with our local project grants. Your school can receive a $200 grant. If you school teams up with an AHEC, you can also apply for a $100 grant. And new this year, your school can also apply for a $100 grant if a local National Health Service Corps (NHSC) ambassador joins NPCW! So what are you waiting for? Visit the links below to fill out the applications:

5. AMSA is in search of students from ALL health professions schools to act as coordinators for this fall?s National Primary Care Week in their areas. Please pass the word to every health profession students you know of! Premed, nursing, dental, physician assistant (PA) students... are all welcome!

Additionally, it is encouraged that all state governors issue official state proclamations for National Primary Care Week. Last year 23 states recognized NPCW - help us increase that number!! Most states require an in-state request in order for this to be approved but do not worry - AMSA has already prepared a letter of request and a sample proclamation to send to the governors! Just go to http://www.amsa.org/programs/npcw/recognize.cfm to get started. You just send us an email indicating that you would like to send a letter to your state governor and we will send you the information and envelopes.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact the NPCW team!
