Hi guys,

I'm a bit confused about something and would appreciate anyone's advice.

Aright so if I don't send the secondary application to a school after sending the primary, am I considered to have applied for the school?

If yes, when asked by a second medical school about my status at the first one, then am I:
a) currently under review, b) rejected, c) waitlisted

Thanks in advance & Merry Christmas!

If you don't send in secondaries, I think that pretty much says that your not going through with the full application process for that school. You're indirectly withdrawing your application?

if you apply and don't fill out a secondary i do believe that they consider you applying. they will send you a rejection at the very end. I remember not completing like 12 secondaries and got a bunch of those reject letters in the spring. i was like oooo, i actually applied to these places? cause after a while all the schools and apps start to meld together and u forget. if you check the school on AMCAS, they will send you some form of decision later at the end no matter what.

If the secondary application deadline has passed then you are not really any of those... I guess "rejected" is most appropriate. If the deadline has not yet passed then you are "currently under review." I'm not on an ADCOM, I'm just thinking of what sounds most honest and appropriate.

Ya that all makes sense
Thanks everyone
happy holidays!

Question: Who is asking you these questions about your status at other schools? I thought this was bad form to do and that most medical schools do not do it?!

I've been asked in numerous interviews how many schools I've applied to, where, and if I've been accepted/where. My application is relatively unique though, so I think they are asking more out of sincere curiosity, although I'm pretty sure one school specifically wanted to know since they didn't think I would actually attend there.

Yeah, I've been debating how in detail to answer those questions. If asked where I applied to my advisor's (and other students' advisors') response is to be general and vague ("I applied broadly to some state schools and those that interested me out of state") but not to give specifics unless we are hounded on. In which case it's kind of rude to ask, but they were the ones who went there. I've also been told not to let people know I was accepted by offering the information when the opportunity arose but only when asked directly so I don't know what's a better option. I don't want it to seem like I'm hiding anything, but I also don't want where I am applying to, to be the focus of the questions and not why I am a good candidate for this particular school I am at right now.

On another note it bothered me greatly that that post had many sentences ending with prepositions. I hope that is something "up with which you can put..." 😀

It can definitely be difficult in deciding how to answer. I agree that a vague response is best at first, and then offer more details if they keep asking about it. I did tell one school that I was already accepted when it came up in conversation to let them know that I wasn't coming in and saying I love their school because I was desperate for an acceptance but rather I truly wanted to go there. I wouldn't generally do that, but their school is a new one that is specifically looking for people that like how they are doing things.

If you were not planning on sending in the secondary then you should have sent the school an email asking to withdraw your application. If you just never turned it in before the deadline they should send you a letter/email saying your application has been withdrawn, which I guess is better than being rejected but if you apply again you'll still be considered a reapplicant.

If a second school asks you about this other school just say you withdrew your app.
