AUA is giving me Problems, Just got rejected

I applied about 3 months ago and was a class short. So my application was put on hold while i was taking the class during the summer. After about a month, i got a rejection letter. I just called AUA and they said that my overall GPA was good 3.5 from my secondary school, and 2.9 from my primary school.

They said, however, that my science GPA was low at 1.7. I told him that my last grade was on its way, which was a 5 credit hour class, which was an A (organic Chem) He also said i had an F and a few D's. So now my last grade is on its way and they said they will see what they can do.

Did anyone else have a problem with AUA.....man i hope i get in.
 
Well, a 1.7 is extremely low... how high will it be after the 5 credit class? Maybe you'll have a shot if it jumps to over a 2.5, which seems unlikely.
 
I thought they had a program where if the student was low in GPA, he could be accepted into a special program to see if he can tale the rigorous medical courses.

Did you do an SMP or post-bacc program? I would suggest you do one of those and kick total a$$ in your classes. If you get a high enough GPA in your post-bacc, then you should try reapplying to the Caribbean. It won't cancel out your undergrad GPA, but the admissions committee may look at it and see it as evidence that you have significantly improved and that you can handle the medical curriculum.
 
You were rejected because you need at least a C in the required courses to be considered.

IF you cannot get a C in required courses, then you will waste your time and money in medical school.
 
thats what i don't understand. I do have at least a C or better in every class. Its just that I retook the classes that had D's and they were better grades.

Then that is different. Does the 1.7 include the retakes?

I sincerely doubt they have a Master's from an SMP program. No way they'd accept someone with a 1.7 sGPA.

Hmm, like McGillGrad said, is that 1.7 with the retakes factored in? If you still have a 1.7 with retakes, what did you go from? A D to a C? Retaking a class you got a D in and only getting a C isn't very impressive, unfortunately. They really expect A's in a class you've already been in once.
 
1.7 is failing, even if you got an A in a 5 unit class, it really wouldn't do much. Everyone thinks that they will do a lot better if only they get accepted. This is often not the case. People will do ~ the same, maybe worse if they're not used to the course load. You don't want to get accepted, fail out, then have a huge debt hanging over your head b/c you were too proud to give up. Not becoming a doctor isn't the end of the world.

Apply to one of the others like Xavier or SJSM they will admit you
 
I talked to an advisor named Darren Thomas, he told me that he will see what he can do for me. Its not that i cannot take the course load, i just had a really bad Semester due to family relations. I know i can handle it. I really hope they consider me. otherwise i will apply to St. James.

And yes the 1.7 is with the retakes, but they have not included the 5 credit hour organic chem class, which i go an A in. as far as the other grades go, i recieved an F and replaced with a C, D replaced with a C, D replaced with an A. What i don't get is that first they say that even if you have a bachelors degree, it won't help much. all they look at is the basic sciences they need. Then when they look at GPA, they factor all the classes you took instead of just the ones they need.

WHy only AUA? They are only 3 years old, there are better schools (I have nothing against AUA ) there are other schools that can get the job done. The goal should be to be a DOC not to attend one school or another, if one doesn't accept you move on to another.

Most students have degrees; are you surprised then that you don't get special treatment for having one?

Of course; this is how every school, Caribbean, Israel, USA, Canada, etc. looks at things. A 4.0 in the sciences and a 2.0 in everything else isn't going to get you into any school worth a damn.

so what other schools do you think i should appy to with my stats. by the way i plan on study hardcore for the mcat. will this help with my stats?
 
HELLOOO, you have a 1.7 science gpa. Take more science courses.

the 1.7 SCI GPA is BIG problem, with the A in orgo so it pulls you up to 2.0?
WOW with all the D's still recorded with retakes with C's it looks bad anyway you cut it, this is why the Admission people do not want to accept you at this time.

It "Paints a Pictire" of some one with lackluster motivation. Caribbean is harder to succeed then US after Basic Sci (USMLE Many Fail this or fail to even get there) Caribbean schools want to admit people they feel have at least a chance of succeeding, look you can say anything but what you have as record does not match what you say.

If dedicated then yes do well on an MCAT, I would love for you to better then 28 on it. That will help if the Sci is 2.0 or above.

As for schools go to www.valuemd.com and take your pick any that are WHO,IMED,ECMFG are fine, the ECMFG just put out that any school that was not on the IMED list for your whole 4 years of School will not be certified in the end. SO make sure a school is on IMED.

Don't apply anywhere yet... take more classes for at LEAST a semester. If you don't get all A's, reconsider going to medical school. I know some classes are harder than others, and some teachers are dicks, but seriously... you need to show to the admissions people as well as yourself that you can handle a heavy load of science classes.
 
aiite whosthis im not gonna bash that 1.7 science GPA because everyone deserves a shot at their dream. if u really want to become a doctor it takes great sacrifice and with that said like all the others have said you need to go and take extra science classes to get that GPA above a 2.0. med school is only going too get harder so you need to continue on your positive path and keep adding As to your transcript. BTW, have you taken the MCAT because that is a good way to redeem urself for a poor GPA.

Look there are Dreams then Reality, If someone cannot do the sci then at some point you have to realize that there are other things then being a Doc

Also I disagree I know many with Poor GPA and decent MCAT (like 30) who will never get in with that combo.

Lets give decent advice and wake up!

Ur tellin it like it is which is also a respectable approach. But wat kinda advice can you give someone who has also taken the science courses and wants to become a doc. Wat direction would you steer this person if you believe med school is no longer an option for the OP?

Look I do not Know? I'm an RN and a 3rd year med student and I know very little about who this person really is, but what I do know is that this is tough, and Going the Caribbean route is tougher, and I know this first hand, DO you want to push a person that has a lot of trouble with the Science into a 200k situation where they may fail and have these loans to pay back without being a Physician?

Once you get into this you are committed there is no try there is only Do.

There is a difference between desire and ability

Hey if everyone could be a Doctor they would be right? It's not for everyone.

To the OP:

Why do you want to be a doctor? Are other health careers out of the question? Things like nursing, respiratory therapy, etc..? You might find you actually enjoy one of those careers.
 
List all of your sciences courses here, with your original grades (and retake grade listed afterwards for retaken classes). Your GPA could potentially be competitive for a US medical school; an osteopathic school, that is. This is because of the nature of how retakes are calculated.

MD (Both US & Caribbean schools):

You get a D in a 3 credit course, retake get a B (science)
Get an F in a 4 credit class, retake and get an A (science)
Get a B in 3 credit class
Get a C in 3 credit class
Get a C- in 3 credit class, retake and get a B+ (science)
-------------------------------------------
cumulative GPA = 2.28, science GPA = 2.15

DO

Same grades as above, but to DO schools, they only consider the most recent grade for retakes. Therefore, a D retaken with an A means they only count the A! So your GPA would theoretically be:
--------------------------------------------
cumulative GPA = 3.11, science GPA = 3.49

So as you can see, you could be a really, really poor applicant to MD schools (US & abroad) with a 2.28/2.15, but to a DO school, you are a fairly competitive 3.11/3.49.

Who knows... I guess they agree with the way AMCAS calculates GPAs, not the way the AACOMS does. Either way, since most Carib schools have lower GPA averages than DO schools, the fact that GPAs are calculated differently is balanced out. So a 3.6 (DO avg.) would be a 3.4 (MD avg.) would have a shot at either DO or Caribbean MD.
 
I know 1.7 is beyond low for a science GPA, but i have heard of post bacc programs. But is the program a "real" program or is it just going back to the school you were in and retaking classes. If so, which post bacc should i do? I calculated my science GPA the way DO schools would, and it came out to a 2.9. What would i have to do if i wanted to get into a DO school possibly? You all are seriously helping me alot and i appreciate it.

Honestly if you do not want to go to the Caribbean then to go to a US school will take 3 things,
1. Time, you need a few years distance from this then you can say you are different now,work in Health care for a while ( this will help you)
2. Post Bac with nothing less then a 3.5 sci grade
3. MCAT of over 30

alright guys, have not been here in a while but Its been about 2 1/2 years retaking classes and doing a master in biology. I studied hard and took my MCAT and received a 42 🙂 . I was accepted into john hopkins med school. If anyone needs help on how to study let me know, there alot of people that bash and alot that help. Dreams can come true! thanks everyone.
 
The gpa and mcat is a crazy discrepancy, though I don't get why someone would repost 4 yrs later to troll. I'm confused.
