AUC increase tuition again!!

An AUC student's 2 cents:

AUC just announced another 10% tuition increase today, making at least more expensive than Ross (not sure about SGU).

While the CEO claimed that the school has invested significantly in infrastructure and clinical sites, there is no evidence to support it. Current basic science students had to lobby for over a year for the owner repair the non-reliable internet/network that has plague the campus for at least the 1.5 years that I have been there. Furthermore, there are numerous reports from current clinical students that there is a severe shortage of clinical rotation spots.

Given the current state of affairs at AUC and its tuition increase policies (10% every year, current calculation is about 190-200k in tuition alone for a degree), it is advisable that any pre-med students considering the Caribbean option should avoid AUC.

Unless this is corrected, AVOID applying to AUC and let them know that raising the tuition from 9,500 per semester in 1996 to 15000 a semester in less than 10 years without any significant upgrades in campus or rotations is criminal!!

This is bad. Really bad. This is way more important than outdated computer networks. This is one of the most important aspects of your medical education, and one that all premeds should investigate carefully for all school(s) you apply to (including newer DO schools in the US, etc.).

Lets be clear that the choice of good carib schools is limited. The top 4 schools know they are the desirable choices. As is, they see that SGU is raking in the DOUGH with astronomical tuition ( I exaggerate! but its high).
Private schools, even those in the US, have raised their tuition alot in the last decade. Those that NEED to attend will certainly pay if a successful outcome is certain.

What they should also see is that SGU has the right plan to produce a satisfied and successful medical graduate (IMO). They should try to follow suit! Your entire student body should lobby the administration for better results, starting with readily available clinical spots for current students.

If the AUC tuition = SGU tuition, and AUC isnt fulfilling your requirements, consider transferring.

Dont stress, McGillGrad, I speak from experience. I am not a stranger to arguing with administrations. I detest irresponsibility from leaders that we put our trust in. I doubly detest those who take our future hard earned money simply to line their pockets because they can! If these things were occurring at my alma mater, I would certainly do what was necessary to ensure they are accountable for their spending.

Is there a student representative on the Board of AUC? someone who can listen in on those meetings and voice the concerns of the students?

I suggest taking a hammer and maybe a sickle to the golden T statue and stage a revolution of sorts.... afterall, who the **** would erect a statue of himself when he is still alive? (and not expect it to be torn down by angry revolutionaries?)

The day that AUC listens to students' concerns for real will be the day that pigs fly...

A revolution must always be in order to challenge the greed of the administrators. It is always money that is at the root of these problems. Perhaps the students can stage a campus revolution and drive out the administrators and take over the administration of the medical school themselves? Or perhaps they can offer to recruit former AUC alumni back to their medical school to do the teaching? Surely, those students and alumni of AUC would make better administrators because they have a stake in the reputation of the medical school.

If I was in your position, I too would want to stage a people's revolution.

I attended AUC in the 90's when Paul Tien was in charge. I went straight through to finish in 38 months. Their policy was to not increase your tuition as long as you didn't sit out. So I paid $4,600 or $4,800 a semester for 5 semesters and then slightly more for clinicals. It was beautiful. I rotated with Rossies who had started at the same time and their initial tuition was about the same, but in 8 semesters their tuition nearly doubled. It was great policy. Alas Yife Tien is a boob.
