I am interested in the field of audiology and am wondering how difficult graduate courses are. How heavy is science and math in these courses? I have taken calculus and 2 biology classes at my current university, what other science or math courses would help prepare me or benefit me for audiology courses?
Thanks
This is a great question! I received my undergraduate degree in Speech and Hearing Sciences, and will be attending the same school for my AuD. My undergraduate program is well regarded for preparing its students well for graduate programs in both SLP and Audiology. From my observations and what was recommended to me:
Introductory classes in linguistics that focus on phonetics and language development
Psychology classes, preferably biopsychology, child development and psycholinguistics
Neuroscience classes if any are offered at your school...most schools should have a class offered on the anatomy and mechanisms of the brain.
Classes on education
Physics class
A class on grant writing? (A joke but...if you are interested in pursuing the AuD/PhD track, it may not be a bad idea)
Am I missing anything else?? I feel like I am..
Most programs require you to take a basic biology class, one science class (this may include geology and astronomy), a psychology class...and i think that's it? It is of my personal opinion that the pre-reqs need to be more extensive. I don't believe these requirements would prepare me for the level of coursework I anticipate. You will be taking classes that incorporate neuroscience, physics, psychology and maybe some linguistics at the graduate level.
