Hey folks,

I'm currently a 3rd year and planning out my 4th year. I finish up with my Cores in mid August. I was planning on taking Sept off to prep for Step 2 then do my Audition/Away rotation in October.

I heard that might not be a good idea and that I should just do my audition in Sept instead of October. Is this true?

Any suggestions?

Thanks

October is too late. Assume it takes two weeks to get the letters written and into ERAS, we're talking about mid-November. By that time I've given away almost all of the interview slots.

Do it the other way around.

I don't mean to hi jack, but i didn't realize that October was late! My first choice is July to do my away. I am worried I won't be "at my best" since it will be my first 4th year rotation, but are you saying it is better to be early and rough around the edges than polished and do an away in october? WOW

I had a friend who did a rotation in October and that was a little late. Truth is the people who write your LORs have other things to do so they should be given a fair amount of time.

I did one rotation in July and one in Sept. This worked out great. I had all my LORs in by the 2nd or 3rd week of Oct.. Well in advance of when the MSPE (Deans Letter) went out.

My advice is that if you CAN be done with your aways by very early October.

????? They do not exist just to write MY LOR????

I did one rotation in July and one in Sept.
How did July go? Did it take you time to get in the rhythm or was it OK?

Get some sleep and break a leg tomorrow! (not literally, of course!)

Amazingly enough this is quite true..Although to be honest I was very pleasantly surprised how nice and willing they all were.

You know everyone wants to knock their socks off and I sort of did. I mean they know it is the beginning and they know what to expect. I thought I worked hard enough to get an A but I had one bad shift with one attending and i really believe that that caused me to get a B+. On the other hand when I interviewed there one of my interviews was with a resident who I knew and he went over the LOR I got from there and he basically told me it was glowing (without letting me see it of course). I got a book by MItchell and Medzon (sp?) and I only wish I had more time to read it before the rotation, it made me look like a champ! I highly recommend it for 4th yr rotations.. I used it on my 2nd rotation and lets just say it def didnt hurt.

Thanks a lot! It will be great to be done!

What I tell our students is to do July or August with us to do that polish and to get SLORs from home, then do the away in Sept or at worst Oct and get another SLOR and make a good impression at the away.

Follow the advice of the wise EM sage that is BKN. He knows of what he speaketh. 😀

Could you lay it on a little thicker. 😍

I could try. But I might need to ingest some serious sugar. Or tequila.

Or both.

Thanks...I'll do the Audition in September then....

Faculty interview 2008. Tequila guaranteed!

Sorry, another hijack!

What about doing an away rotation in October, just to get to know the people who are at a particular program you are interested in, without asking for LOR?

As long as it involves lime and salt. I've become a little partial to patron silver. 😎

Oh yes. I am sending you an email shortly... EBM question, etc.
