I'm gearing up the scheduling for auditions, and wondered what the absolute latest month I should schedule up to, to be considered for residency interviews. I know the AOA match is in Feb., while the NRMP is in March. I've had some unforseen issues with the school and scheduling of certain rotations, and so I'm in a slight bind. I have January open - is that still okay to do an audition rotation at an ACGME anesthesiology residency program? Or will that be too late to get an interview? I'm a DO student, so I'm rotating through AOA and ACGME-accredited programs for 4th year.

January is probably too late to schedule rotations hoping to get an interview. Most programs I interviewed at this year wrapped up their interviews by mid January. Generally you will get most of your interviews before November 1st.

i would say october is the last month an away would get you an interview. But if you want to get a letter of rec out of the away latest i would go for september...

i agree with these dates. at the same time i would say don't do it in july because the attendings will be focusing on the new residents and not on the students as much.

Well - I'm in a bad situation then.

I wanted to go back to my home state to audition; however, my school is making take a neurology end of july. Then I have 2 straight months at a DO program, followed by 1 month at an MD program, then 1 month DO, then 1 month MD, and then an open month (January). I guess I could push the 3rd DO rotation back? B'ah, I am at a loss. If not for the neurology requirement, I'd been in much better shape. Suggestions?

BTW .... I applied to do the neurology rotation at a DO program that has both neurology and anesthesiology residency programs as a way to get face time with the anesthesiology PD and the program itself.

You should decide if you want to go to a DO anesthesiology program or MD one, and I think things will open up nicely for you then as far as schedule. Is there a reason why you would choose a DO spot over MD?

Not really. Outside that I didn't take Step 1. I am prepping hard for Step 2, though. I will need to see how I do on Step 2 and Level 2 and go from there. I plan to take both in June.

I can tell that you are going to do well on both your steps, so if you are interested in a certain MD program > DO program, maybe u can cancel one of your DO rotations and schedule MD one

Sounds like a good idea. I'm pullin' all the stops for these exams. I'm hitting the shelves hard too. The 3rd DO rotation I've got set up I'm not exactly a fan of, and I may just cancel it pending things go well with Step 2, and schedule the away at my home state probably (they dont require you to rotate, but I'm sure being a DO, it's probably a must). I really only have 1 favorite DO program (where I'll be doing the 1st 2 DO rotations). Thanks for the tip.

Did you rotate at any DO programs BTW?

Cancel all of your do program rotations. It's just not worth it for a number of reasons. I'm familar with one that is supposed to be good that hasno trauma, neuro, or transplant exposure among many other issues.

Is it agreed upon that doing an audition in November is pretty much too late? If so, would it be a good idea to do a rotation in EM or Critical Care to get more experience in the ICU/EM setting? The only thing is the program (MD/ACGME-accredited) I'm considering to do this rotation does not have an Anesthesiology residency. Would it be better to do the rotation in EM or in Critical Care?

Or, is it still a good idea to rotate in an anesthesiology-ran unit or sub-specialty in November?

Rotations either get you interviews (October or before, generally) or can get you higher on the list if you already have an interview assuming you do a good job (Jan-Feb). Nov and Dec are a grey zone, I think.

Time in an ICU/EM setting would probably be better in Feb-April if you are willing to do it later, but that's my opinion. If it is a SICU with an anesthesiologist around, I'd use that as an opportunity to get a letter early.
